which anti-psychotic is less likely to cause eps

I cannot tolerate meds that cause inner restlessness. What would be the best anti-psychotic and the med dosage that is least likely to produce eps. thanks

I have a decent answer to your question, and your concern about EPS is understandable.

_Olanzapine_

Olanzapine vs. Risperidone (http://www.vh.org/Providers/Conferences/CPS/04.html#OLANZAPINE):

"Finally, the adverse drug reactions favored olanzapine in that fewer patients experience extrapyramidal side effects, sexual dysfunction, and drooling."

_Quetiapine_

(http://www.vh.org/Providers/Conferences/CPS/04.html#QUETIAPINE):

"There was no difference between quetiapine and placebo treatment groups in the incidence of EPS in 3 placebo-controlled clinical trials using variable doses of quetiapine."

There was no difference between quetiapine and placebo treatment groups in the incidence of EPSE in 3 placebo-controlled clinical trials using variable doses of quetiapine.

All of them can cause EPS. Clozapin is supposed to be the safest anti-psychotic as far as not causing movement disorders like EPS. However even with clozapine there is some potential for EPS. Zyprexa is pretty safe. But again, no anti-psychotic carries with it 0% chance of developing EPS. All of them can, even the modern atypical antipsychotics.

Clozapine is your best bet though, if you really want to avoid EPS.

Clozapine is no longer considered first-line therapy because of its severe side effects. Zyprexa, Seroquel, Risperdal, and Geodon are equally efficacious, have a better side-effect profile, and cause minimal rates of EPS and TD.
