My first full day on No More Meds

Posted by Guinnee Pig on December 26, 2001, at 22:03:57

Well, I have finally weened completely off the Serzone. It's been an interesting few weeks. First I was extremely aggressive and mad - throwing things etc. making a real ass out of my self. Then I became a bit confused and depressed wich then turned into a now extremely anxious feeling. I have interrupted sleep and moments when my heart pounds extremely hard. I feel full of energy and found myself saying extremely loud comments at all three of my family holiday dinner tables. I caught myself being rude to family members, finally, that have been full of shit for years. And I just don't know where it's all coming from. I found myself drinking 2 beers at work tonight -- A folk music school in a big city. Well, let's just point out that I could go on for hours, but my main point is... do you think I should try a different med. or stay off the meds...Any educated opinions out there for someone like me who was on Serzone for a year...500 mg. is where it topped off and also was given Buspar that I stopped immediatly because of the dizziness. Man ... any advice would be good right about now.

GP,

Congratulations on completing your weaning program!

Now, you seem perplexed as to what to do next. I don't think there is any recipe that applies; I think it depends almost solely on how you "feel."

You mention that you are more assertive now. Are you doing things that you (the "real" you) wishes that you wouldn't? I almost have the impression that the greater assertiveness is a good change for you. Also, if the assertiveness/aggression is a side-effect of the weaning, it will probably gradually wear off.

As to where you should go next, gee, it depends on so many things. What did you take the Serzone for? did it help? why did you stop it? how are you doing now? what other meds have you tried, for what conditions? And again -- how are you doing now???

Hi:

Well, there are tons of meds, and sadly the only way is by trial and error, to go through them until you find the right one, and/or combo.

I wish I could say it was easy, or it was/is simple, but I would be fooling myself. Mind you, when I think of the angst I have gone through *off* of medication, that is enough to scare me back onto a med.

Much of it is a long-shot, but to find some relief can be like having relief from the pain of an open flesh wound.

Good luck in your travels, and if a med doesn't work out, just chalk it up to experience, and walk on. BUT, don't stick with a med too long if it is just causing problems. A few books I have read recently by some psych docs emphasize that even though we gotta give meds time, if we are having very, very adverse reactions, either really lower the dose, or try something else, and/or a different combo.

Best wishes..

Jay
