Does this mean adrafinil could be U.S.-bound?

Posted by Rick on December 5, 2001, at 1:30:49

Probably not, especially given the need for quarterly liver panels...but I notice that Cephalon, the U.S. distributor of modafinil (Provigil) has announced they're acquiring Lab Lafon of France, which created and markets (in France) both adrafinil and modafinil. The press release referred to adrafinil as a "CNS stimulant/antidepressant." Coincidentally, ABC-TV just did a report on Provigil yesterday, of course taking a sensationalistic "will you need to sleep any more?" angle. There was no mention of psychotropic properties other than CNS stimulation.

Do you think all this hype will lead to the rescheduling of modafinil? (C-IV to maybe C-II, like ritalin/amphetamine.)

No, I don't see why the hype would put modafinil into a more restricted schedule, especially when the publicity such as ABC's talks about how it's safer than the C-II stims like Ritalin.

I once saw someone suggest (here, I think) that Cephalon went with the C-IV schedule to get the drug on the market quicker, rather than conduct more studies for the FDA to demonstrate lack of dependence and addiction potential. As it stands, the official monograph states that use of modafinil can be "reinforcing" based on a rodent study. I know that I've personally stopped and started it cold turkey several times, as long as three weeks at a time, with no problems except that my social anxiety treatment becomes less robust. (In fact, I suspended my dosing of both Provigil and Serzone -- but not Klonopin -- about two weeks ago as a test to see if the meds on haitus just might be making my #$@%! vitreous eye-floaters more apparent to me. I'm still testing.)

I did read a ng post (not on Babble) from a modafinl user in France whose father works at Lab Lafon. He aserted that business executives abuse modafinil by using it to stay up and alert past the usual working hours. Given how Americans put in more working hours than anyone -- and the gap is unfortunately widening -- I can see how this kind of nonaddictive "abuse" might be viewed as a problem. I know I've stayed up later than I should at times, e.g. posting to Psycho-Babble, because I know that the Provigil will keep me awake and alert the next day -- especially important because fatigue makes me more prone to somatic social anxiety symptoms. But I try to avoid this.
