HI, TO WHO EVERY READS THIS,
I AM VERY CURIOUS ABOUT THE PFEIFFER INSTITUTE. THEY
CLAIM TO BE ABLE TO CORRECT MENTAL DISORDERS BY
CORRECTING ANY BIOCHEMICAL IMBALANCE A PERSON MIGHT
HAVE. THEY DO THIS BY TAKING BLOOD, URINE AND OTHER
SAMPLES AND DETERMINING WHAT DEFICIENCIES A PERSON HAS.
FOR EXAMPLE, THEY SAY A LOT OF PEOPLE WITH DEPRESSION
NEED EXTRA VITAMIN B6 AND ZINC. THIS IS ONLY AN EXAMPLE. ANYWAY, IF INTERESTED PLEASE CHECK IT OUT AT
WWW.HRIPTC.ORG. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE LOTS OF
OTHER OPINIONS ABOUT THIS. DO YOU THINK IT'S QUACKERY? THEY ARE LOCATED IN NAPERVILLE, IL

Hi Angel. If I'm not mistaken, Pfeiffer calls what he does "orthomolecular psychiatry". He's been around for years. I am not one to exclude any treatment alternative from consideration, but I would not place it at the top of my list. I don't think it would do any harm, though. Perhaps you'll find some benefit from balancing electrolytes - magnesium vs calcium. Have you failed to respond to numerous treatments? Is your depression severe and reliably diagnosed?
I really haven't researched Pfeiffer's stuff well enough to call him a quack. You never know!

I don't think it's quackery but it's not necessarily the answer for everyone. I checked out the site & read over a number of the different pages they have. Probably a lot of people could benefit by improving their nutrition.
I know caring about a good diet & healthy foods is often the last thing on a depressed person's mind. Either we don't feel like eating at all, or overeat & all the wrong foods. If we don't have the proper building blocks we need in our foods, we can't very well make the hormones & neurotransmitters we need to.
They don't say that a person wouldn't need medication anymore so that's a good sign. They say they're willing to work in conjunction with a doctor balancing medications & nutritional supplements.

It's certainly not a new approach. A psychiatry professor at Georgetown University (Wash DC) does that method. He wrote a book about it a few years a go. I can't remember his name but his book is called the Antidepressant Survival Guide. I think his name is Robert Hedeya. I have it at home. Let me know if you are interested and I'll find out his name for you.
He checks your blood values including vitamins, minerals, thyroid hormones. He checks for cortisol in the saliva during different times of the day. He analyzes hair samples and all sorts of other stuff. He also prescrbes diets to help with mood.
In his book, he claims that many are helped by this type of checkup BUT he says that it's rare that people are able to stop taking prescription antidepressants as a result. So his orthomolecular replacement technique can make one feel better. But it does not replace antidepressants.
If the Pfeiffer people are claiming that a clinically depressed person can give up their medications as a result of their treatment, I would probably stay away from them.
Basically, you should just ask your family doctor or psychiatrist to do a check of your blood levels including thyroid, if they have not already done so, and that should be sufficient. If you are tired a lot, try a B complex vitamin such as B50. Or just take a multi vitamin/mineral.
