Been on Provigil now for about a month, and now instead of having energy after taking 200 mg at 8am, as prescribed, I have to get back into bed, and usually sleep from 9am to 11:30 am. Then up for about 3 hours, then back in bed for 2-3 hour afternoon nap, then in bed at 9 pm to sleep about 9-10 hours.
I'm sleeping my life away, and there is so much I want to do.I been sleeping like this for years,(when I get a chance)(at work I just suffer with endless extreme fatigue... its a living hell....) and thought that this Provigil would be the answer to my prayers. (actually somedays I can actually get thru the day without napping), but these are rare. Does anyone know of any other meds that I can take so I can at least keep my eyes somewhat open during the day?(note I do not have narcolepsy) just extreme daytime sleepiness
I'm also on Prozac, perphenazine, and Buspar.

Dexedrine & Adderall are amphetamines used for narcolepsy & ADHD and are far more powerful than provigil & roughly similar in strength to Ritalin. Take an hour before you have to get up in the morning and you will jump out of bed even without your alarm clock. But, the euphoric rush from these meds can be psychologically addicting (they make you feel like you are on top of the world, optomistic, & like you can accomplish anything). As long as you stay with your prescribed dose & never increase it or abuse it they are very effective medications. They are a pain to get a prescription for since they are schedule II controlled substances and require triplicate prescriptions with no refills allowed.

I also had a problem with sleeping too much. After I was diagnosed with inattentive add, I had no problem getting a prescription for a psychostimulant. They do work great. I've taken Ritalin which was like being on a roller coaster (feel great for about 3 hours-then bam- come down REAL fast. Concerta and Medidate are new ritalin extended release capsules that last 8-12 hours and the effect is quite smooth. But my favorite is the Adderal XR. Very smooth and you take one in the morning and it last all day. The psychostimulants have really helped me get through the day and concentrate much better on my work. They are very safe and have great side effect profiles (I lost weight and started exercising). The only problem is finding a doctor that will prescribe them for you. I haven't found one yet that will prescribe a psychostimulant as an add-on for depression. You have to be diagnosed as either ADD or narcolepsy. Good luck

Hi -
I think perphenazine is an anti-manic or anti-psychotic, isn't it? (ie; isn't it a tranquilizing antagonist of dopamine?)
If it is, then I don't think there is any doubt that if you dropped that med, you will experience a huge improvement in your sedation. If you are taking it for anxiety reasons, there are other options. For one, you might drop buspar, which is more likely to increase anxiety mixed with Prozac. Another is to switch from Prozac to Zoloft, Celexa, Paxil, or Nardil.
Good luck - but I really think the dopamine antagonist has to go first. There are few legal ways to better severely oneself.

> I'm also on Prozac, perphenazine, and Buspar. Thanks to all for the advice!!This pscyho-babble is wonderful!
I'm hesitant to drop the perphenzine, as it was the med that 10 years ago, brought me out of my shell.(when added to the prozac)
I'm eager to return to my pscyh to request the adderal xr. (just hope I have better luck then I had with the provigil,) which now seems like a sleeping pill when I take it!!!Just hope my pscych will prescribe this for me!
or one of the others meds suggested.
thanks again everyone! Vicky
