Posted by idgie on November 23, 2001, at 2:49:07

A friend of mine is on zyprexa(5 mg 1x a day) and hasn't really seen any change,however I am on trileptal(150 mg 2x a day)and haven't seen a change either.I am still a b-tch or angel every five minutes.Can you guys give me any ideas on the subject??I know from searching that many of you haven't tried trileptal but if you have had any horrid experiences on zyprexa please let me know!Thanks,Idgie

They're completely different drugs. But anyway, it's hard to predict what will help any particular person with mood swings. Some people are helped by antipsychotics (like Zyprexa), some are helped by anticonvulsants (like Trileptal), some need a different class of drug altogether (antidepressants, for example). Also, some people may respond to one drug of a particular class but not to a different drug of the same class -- for example, even if Trileptal turns out not to be the right thing for you, Depakote (another anticonvulsant) might work.

BTW: I take the same dose of Trileptal as you are on (300 mg/day), and I gather that this is a pretty low dose. (I'm taking it to prevent possible seizures, and since I only had a couple of the episodes in a year, my doctor figured I probably could get by on a low dose.) 5 mg/day of Zyprexa is also a low dose, although if your friend's problem is mood swings too, she shouldn't need as high a dose as a person taking it for schizophrenia would.

////Hi Elizabeth:)

I had wanted to post a message about some things I've heard regarding particular anticonvulsants. My son's appt. with Dr. K.I. A. (Know-It-All) is this coming Thursday and as he's very unhappy with side effects of Dilantin, he wants to ask about others. From input I've gleaned from others, I've learned that Trileptal is a "cousin" drug to Tegretol and doesn't have as many side effects; Lamictal can be an "energizer" for some;' and Keppra almost gives one a feeling of being "high" or having a slight "buzz." Your thoughts?

Anyone?

Hi! Trileptal is usually prescribed above 300mgs/daily. I used to take it at 1,200mgs/daily, at one point with zyprexa (then seroquel..then abilify...) Anyway, a higher dose of trileptal may be warranted, but mood-stabilizers take time to work. For the record, Trileptal essentially is Tegretal; they just added an oxygen molecule or something so there are far fewer side effects. Anti-psychotics take less time to work but can have nasty side effects; zyprexa made me crazy and seroquel..didn't do much. There's also Tardive Dyskinesia and Neuroleptic Malignancy Syndrome to worry about with the antipsychotics, so I'd try trileptal first...if it doesn't work, maybe try abilify; its a new, novel anti-psychotic that appears to have fewer side effects than even the other atypicals and works about as fast as an anti-depressant. Personally, depakote scares me b/c of the pancreatitis and liver damage problems.
