Blood Chemistry

OK, I know I have posted this before, but did not get too much info. Has anybody gotten back unusual blood test results as the result of AD meds. specifically Wellbutrin? I am showing up as anemic, and am having fast pulse, shortness of breath, but no pallor or general malaise. Doc doesn't know any other cause as yet. I think it could be med related, or anxiety related. Any other thoughts? I have read the PDR on Wellbutrin.

Hi Pax,

I just started (the 2nd trial) of WB (as an adjunct with other meds for BPII, SAD, etc.) with good results, but at a much lower dosage than yourself and most others take. I definitely am experiencing an increased resting HR, but so far no significant BP elevation, etc.
You mentioned an objective test indicating anemia?
FWIW, bupropion, is the only AD I have taken that has significantly decreased my appetite-especiallly appetite for proteins (pork, chicken, beef, etc.). I wonder if perhaps this might be medication induced nutritional deficits??

Those are possibilitues, Mitch. But I have been on WB for about 3 years now, why the sudden change? The only thing I have changed was stopping drinking. Granted, I DID hoist a few beers, maybe a case a week. I guess that would explain SOME weight loss, but not 45 pounds.

I do eat less as well, since beer increases one's appetite, as well as enlargens the stomach.

Pax,

Perhaps this is a metabolic change of sorts--OH, I just thought of something. I think that alcohol might have kept the blood level of buproprion (and/or its metabolites) at a lower level than it ordinarily would be (a liver enzyme thing). Perhaps stopping drinking has RAISED the bupropion levels in your blood?? You might need a dosage decrease to compensate for it (that is if that is the case). If you have lost 45 pounds and don't have much appetite that could explain the anemia on its own. Maybe you need to step your dose down to 100mg bid (I think your on 150mg BID, right?). Also, an EKG might be a good idea (get "wired-up" when you notice the elevation the most). I don't notice any heart rate elevation until later in the day. In fact during the morning-midday time it seems *slowed* at times (weird).

Thanks for the follow-up, Mitch. That is a possibility that I had not considered (the alcohol and WB interactions). I had an EKG, and wore a Holter Monitor. Doc said it was mostly "normal". But the chase remains!
