my pdoc precribed 100 mg/day to me today, though we may increase.
can any of you tell me about your experience with neurontin--how long it takes to set in, side effects, how many mgs effective, etc?
anything appreciated--
thanks,
sar

Sar:
Can't stop watching the carnage on TV (the planes slicing thru the towers, playing over and over again, the burning pile of wreckage at the pentagon)...
so am up late, it's 2:30 am...as for neurontin: i'm on 600 mg x 4 per day (total=2400 mg/day)... take 'em like candy... keep wondering whether they'll make 'em in orange-flavored chewables! ---
so i personally don't see the efficacy of 100 mg... maybe my mood swings are worse.. i am BP I, so i'm told, but who knows what the hell all this dx means...go for the gold, ask for at least 100 mg 4x a day, spaced evenly thru the day, this will bring you the best results, IMHO... (your mileage may vary, as they say...), and i suggest more, but sheesh, at least 400 mg. spaced thru the day because it doesn't stay long in the blood levels, short half-life, as they say...
ask your pdoc if s/he has ever prescribed it before? i think s/he may not have much experience with the drug, just my hunch...
also: i have seen 300 and 600 mg tabs, but never 100... maybe i was a bad case... if so, why wasn't i prescribed depakote or something? i dunno...was i depressed as hell this morning on my way to the winery, driving over the beautiful hills, just because of the puny sadnesses of my little, insignificant life? not having heard the news yet? after the start of this WW III, how far will any of us drop down? more over on PSB, i guess...
you want that neurontin scrambled, or sunny-side up? white or wheat toast? chili sauce, no catsup...
with love, and a prayer for the dying,
wendy

Not to repeat myself I posted last week about my experience with it so check the listings for last week or rather the last posting period. Or do a search.
Good luck! Personally I noticed benefit right away or 300mg x2 day. Your mileage may vary.

So, it's Neurontin instead of Depakote. Much easier to manage in my opinion.
I agree 100% with Wendy, and love her post.
I was taking 2400 to 3000 mg/day until I switched to Depakote. My understanding is 600 mg has about a 4 hour half-life.
FME (From My Experience):
-Calming
-Not sedating (is for some folks)
-I could tell a difference if I missed a dose - was more "jittery".
-It didn't really help me on its own, but rather as an adjunct for Topamax. But many time people here have stood by its efficacy on its own.
-I didn't experience any side effects.
I stopped Neurontin and added Depakote to Prozac/Topamax recently because I was rapid cycling and hit a major depression. I don't know if it's not as strong as something like "Depakote" - I know the side effect profile is lower, so I think it's great that you're starting with that.Good luck.

sar,
Just so you know, I take 100 mgs of Neurontin 4 times a day with good result. I can't tolerate the mega doses that some people take. I find that this small amount is calming and also stabilizing. It is so important to take the med every 5 hours or so. If I forget, I start of get edgy and jittery. I start to wonder why I feel so yucky and nervous. Then I realize it's past the time that I was supposed to take my mid day dose. I feel better very soon after I take my missed dose.I hope you find neurontin useful. Slow and low is what I say. You don't want to take more medication than you need. In my case, less of a few meds is better than tons of one or two.
Of course, YMMV...
Good luck,
Chloe

i'm sorry, i made a mistake in my first post. this first week, i'm taking 100 mg 3x daily (300 mgs a day) and my pdoc is titrating me up to 900 mg over the next 3 weeks.
neuronin makes me feel good. it may just be the placebo effect right now, but hey...
my pdoc recommended depakote, "the gold standard," but i'm not down with hair loss/weight gain, so he went with my suggestion of neurontin. he's real cool
thanks everyone,
sar
