This forum can be a HORRIBLE medium for advice!

Posted by n0matter on September 6, 2001, at 8:45:34

I've been following posts (and posted myself a few times), and it seems like at least 75% of the responses people receive to their trepidatious inquiries re: meds are all about horror stories! People, don't you realize that, when you say "I took that and it was a 'LIVING HELL'", you're subconciously influencing that person and partially determining what the ultimate effects of that med are?! Please ALWAYS include a "My experiences shouldn't be taken as the end all/be all. There are many success stories about this med out there." disclaimer if you're going to post this negativity. You may be depriving an individual of just the med they need with your negative feedback.

The truth is that with most every antidepressant, 60-70% of people do real well on it, achieving remission. So they couldn't all be so bad.

I myself fail to see such horror stories. whatever side effects people talk about wouldn't be much of a problem if their depression is under control or whatever problem they may have. mental health is most important of all. I personally would trade both my legs, my left arm, my genitals just to be back to my normal self. take care

One thing you might want to keep in mind is that a lot of the folks who gravitate here are people who are having some difficulties with their meds -- be it side effects, not getting the type of relief they are wanting, etc. People who are having great relief with their meds don't tend to seek out advice -- hence, don't find psycho-babble to post.

That said, while there are negative posts about some of the meds, there are positive posts also. I think any person has to read broadly. For instance, I found this board because I was seeking information on topamax. I read every post on this med -- I could have been negatively influenced if I had just read the first couple -- they were quite negative. But overall, I realized that it was a medicine that could possible work well for me. The reader has to be patient.

Any bulletin board information of this nautre should always be viewed with a skeptical eye. Depression, in and of itself, lends us all to being easily swayed one way or another depending on our disposition and current situation. I agree with the originator of this thread. Caveats are always well-advised.

It just takes too long to post disclaimers every time you want to express something. Dr. Bob puts it plainly at the top of the page: Don't believe everything that you read. It's up to individuals to research and gather information from various sources, and this forum is just one of them. I think this group of folks is great, myself. I mean, have you taken a look at the alt.psych forums? This is cognoscentian Utopia compared to some corners of the 'net.

A WONDERFUL medium for advice

I agree with the idea of people with negative comments about meds noting that it is their experience with that particular med. I know that when I look for information, I make this assumption when reading a post – it is one person’s experience. I also make the assumption when reading a product monograph, that many of the side effects described occur in a very few cases and I am not likely to have the same experience. What I have really found useful about this board is that it’s real people with problems akin to mine who are actually taking the meds. My pdoc is great but she cannot tell me how sedating Remeron might be because she has never taken it. She relies on reports from other patients and then does what I do – and what we all do – discount some of the wild exaggerations and look for the middle ground which is likely closer to the truth. When we experience something we are not prepared for, this is a wonderful place to find out in a hurry if we should be worried, if it is ‘normal’ and will pass soon and add to the knowledge about that med. If only my doc would respond as quickly as the people on this board do.

I too have gotten wonderful information from this site. I've noticed that almost everyone notes, when discussing their reaction to a med, that "your milaege may vary". Indeed, my own "adventure" in psychopharmacology has yeilded questions that have not been (and probably cannot be)answered. For example, why did Paxil fail and Celexa succeed? Objectively, it makes no sense, both are in the same classs of medications. Yet that's what happened.

So I second the notion- great site!

Dave
