Prozac

Posted by cjay on September 4, 2001, at 20:19:12

I was diagnosed with major depression a year ago, at that time my doctor put me on effexor xr (250mgs)which I stayed on for 8 months. I then switched to celexa (40mgs)for 3months and now I have a perscription for Prozac.(20mgs)
I have had "extreme" fatigue from the onset of my depression and neither the effexor or celexa has helped.
My question is does anybody have any feed back about Prozac?
Thanks, Cjay

Cjay,
You might find Prozac more acceptable than the others. That's because it usually tends to be more stimulating, while the others are generally not.

For help in sleeping, help with sexual function, and to turbocharge the Prozac, you might want to keep Zyprexa in mind. If the Prozac alone doesn't work out to your expectations, please try combining Zyprexa 5mg with it before completely switching to something else. A whole lot of people have been helped by the addition of Zyprexa when an antidepressant alone didn't do the trick. Clinical studies look great too.

Hopefully Prozac alone will do the trick, but generally it seems to me that when someone has already tried and failed a couple other drugs, the likelihood of any single drug working well is greatly diminished. For truly amazing results, combinations are often needed. And when it comes to combinations, I have seen nothing in the real world more impressive than Zyprexa. Just something to keep in mind if Prozac alone doesn't do it. Your doc might want to switch you to yet another antidepressant, add Lithium or other mood stabilizer, try tricyclics, etc....forget all that stuff. Go straight to Zyprexa. Second choice would be Risperdal. Only after that would I consider any other options.

Best wishes to you! And by the way, if you are sensitive to side effects, you can mix the contents of a Prozac capsule in orange juice and drink custom sized small doses as you get accustomed to it. Stir it well, save the rest in the fridge for next time, stir it well again. You can customize your dose size this way.

> Here's my experience:

30-year-old female - I was switched from 40 mg of celexa directly to 40 mg of prozac. this caused a lot of side effects for me - panic attacks, ocd symptoms, insomnia - overall very bad. but it was that switch, b/c eventually i was o.k. on the prozac.

now up to 60 mg prozac, 1000 mg depakote, 250 mg topamax (am bp ii). i have not tried effexor, but the prozac definitely had more of a positive effect for me than celexa (stimulating and optimistic). theoritically, i shouldn't need it once "stabilized," so we'll see.

good luck!

>Thanks for the input, I start Prozac on Thursday! I have been told by my Doctor not to expect any big changes in the short term, but that I should see changes from week to week. I will also be taking 2x(.05) of Xanax split into 4 doses a day. I am at the point where I will try anything to get out from under this HELL!
Thanks again,
Cjay

Good Luck Cjay. I recently started on prozac as well (it's been a month at 20 mg) and am definitely feeling better, but a little more tired and scatter brained than usual. I hope you have good results, keep us informed. It took me about 3 weeks to feel anything, which I guess is pretty standard, so hang in there.

all the best!

hi guys. i am on prozac generic 20mg 2 days now. first day i felt absolutely horrible for 4 hours. enough to want to be hospitalized. but it passed. perhaps it was just a down period or a reaction to me stopping 5htp. i was later feeling better. and so i hope to continue taking it. along with despiramine which i will start today. the two together are supossed to be twice as effectice as eighter alone. and can work in 1-2 weeks for some people. so perhaps i will have some early improvement.

generic prozac has been shown to work just as well as normal right?

I started off on prozac and then switched to generic with no noticeable change (except that it was a whole lot cheaper) so don't worry. some people on this board have noticed differences, but i am not one of them. hang in there, and give it time.

hope you feel better soon

Generic Prozac v. Regular Prozac - differences?

That's a very good question adamie!

I would love to hear from more folks re: their opinion on this.
