Nocturia and AD Meds

Posted by paxvox on August 24, 2001, at 8:14:07

Do any of you have nocturia ( excessive night time waking for urination) that you think may be attributed to your AD meds? Especially Wellbutrin? I know that depression and sleep disturbances on their own can cause nocturia, but I'm wondering if the Wellbutrin is exacerbating this condition. Basically, I'm trying to R/O physical causes for my sleep problems. My GP gave me Flomax to help the nocturia, but so far (4 nights) no improvement. Anyone have similar problems?

PAX
I have a similar problem on Celexa, even a micro dose of less than 2 mgs seems to get my kidneys going. The higher I go dosage wise, the worse the running to the bathroom in the night is. However, to combat this problem, I TRY to stop drinking liquids after 6-7 pm. By reducing fluid intake for 4 or so hours before bed, you empty out a bit and may give your body a longer stretch before you have to get up.

I do make sure I drink tons of water during the day. Fluids are important, esp. when one is taking medications. So don't dehydrate!! But you may want to cut down on the liquids in the evening and see if that give you a little more sleep in the night.

Take care
Chloe

Thanks Chloe,

Yes, I have done the fluid avoidance routine, and do not drink caffeine after the morning (1 cup coffee). No alcohol, tried to increase day-time fluid intake. I am going to see a Urologist Tues. My GP had given me Flomax to help, maybe I need a higher dose. I has prostitis when I was 20 (I'm 41 now) there may be some defect, I don't know. I did read that nocturia was one of the main side effects of Wellbutrin, so I guess I'll have to deal.
