PAXIL - LOSS OF EFFECTIVENESS

Posted by SHADOW on August 13, 2001, at 21:58:27

I've been taking paxil for the past two years with great results in terms of balancing my mood. Over the past month I've noticed a gradual return of my depressive symptoms, though they are mild compared to my pre-paxil state. I'm concerned that I'm developing a tolerance to this mediction. Any known research out there or experiences to share?

YES YOu COULD indeed be developing a tolerance to this medication (or any other for that matter) - I DID (after being on it for about 6 years). And realizing it had pooped out on me came a bit late (but better late than never. Then I tapered off it waaaaaaay too fast and got just about every withdrawal symptom in the book.

I would suggest that you tell what you've mentioned here to your pdoc. If your pdoc switches you from Paxil to something else, PLEASE, PLEASE be sure to taper off the Paxil SLOWLY and GRADUALLY. It is known for severe withdrawal and I wouldn't want you or anyone to go through what I did. (at least I did get off it though!)
Good luck and please post to let me know how it goes.

Hmmm. I thought some SSRI's (not all) can be replaced without tapering - so long as they are talking to similar (?) the same (?)(in which case, what would be the point I wonder) neurotransmitter thingamagiggies.

?

You should switch to prozac for a week and a half and then stop. You won't have to deal with any Paxil withdrawl symptoms.
