Stuttering?

Posted by Marcie on August 1, 2001, at 16:26:17

My son was just started on Effexor and his stuttering
has increased significantly. Has anyone else had
this problem or heard of it?

How long has he been on the effexor? How many days, weeks? Do you know what causes the stuttering, I'm not familar with it. Ask your pharmascist why this is happening or the doctor who prescribed the medication.

Best Wishes
Willow

ps someone else will come along with better knowledge than myself.

That's sounds like an adverse reaction. Why did he start taking it in the first place for what problem?
How many milligrams is he taking and how old is he?
I really question doctors sometime.

Marcie said it is making his stuttering worse. When starting effexor it can make you aggitated. But really I have no answers. Just can imagine how Marcie feels. I worry about my little ones.

Hi Marcie, I was on Efexxor for 4 weeks and it made my depression horribly worse. Coming off of it was even more terrible. I joked with my friends that they could just call me porky the pig (even though I felt quite humiliated around strangers and have avoided social activities since. Good news: I have been off of it for 4 days and no stuttering. Bad news: if it helps your son's depression it may be a side effect he may have to deal with-that is awful isn't it? I take topamax and I have to deal with bad taste in my mouth all day but it helps me so much I don't want to give it up. I would just talk to his pdoc if it gets worse, maybe there is something he/she can give him that can help with it. Good luck,
Anna

The report is mixed. There was a case report of successful treatment of stuttering with an SSRI (Paxil). However, there have been at least 2 reports of SSRI-induced stuttering.

There was at least 1 report published indicating significant improvement in stuttering with the use of Risperdal (maximum response at 0.5 mg/day).

Do check this out. We do know that the more adverse attention paid to stuttering, the worse it gets. The less outward attention you pay to this, the better. That is to say, be conserned but DO NOT let your child know this.

We reciently got all the facts on research done on stuttering in the 1940-50's. 2 groups of kids were picked at random. Teachers were told to correct one group if the had any problems with speech but not the other. Most in the corrected group ended up stuttering for life, but not the other group.

Anna said, "I was on Efexxor for 4 weeks. Good news: I have been off of it for 4 days and no stuttering."

In my experience the side-effects of effexor went away after several months. I had suffered with chronic depression as a teenager. My psychologist with me tried to get my gp to prescribe a medication at that time to help. I wish I had had the benefit of medication then.

Marcie, I think you are best to get a professional opionion. (Cam is a pharmascist.) In my opinion, if your son had the stuttering before starting effexor I wouldn't be too concerned unless with time at the same dose it becomes constant.

hi-

My brother had a stuttering problem when he was little, 11 years old, and he went to a speech pathologist for about 4 months and was retrained to think before he spoke and concentrate without any drug intervention.

Why, do they put kids on such strong medications now a days?
I am scared if my children take some sort of test and doesn't answer the questions to the "norm of society standards", then institution of learning is going to 'label' them inept or with some social-dysfunctional disorder, prescribe that they go see a doctor to be put on meds, so that they can walk around with dry little mouths, parched lips and their jaw involuntarily jittering as if they were on "XTC" (MDMA) and walk with a zombish-gait,emotionally not giving a crap about anything, only to figure out when that"trip" they are on is going to wear-off!

Screw society norms, I would rather them be as freaky as Angelina Jolie but at least be WHO they want to be and let their imagination and creativeness not be soffocated or veiled with the haze of prescribed drugs.
When I was in school, I got pimples, I was depressed, I had curly hair and I wanted it to be straight. My dad was a 'functional' alcoholic.I felt sorry for him. My mom was schizophrenic controled by haldol, but sometimes she would no take her medicine and hear voices and tell me how much she hated me and wished I was dead and how she loved my brother more, and if she knew I was a girl when she was pregnant I would have been aborted....blah ,blah, blah.
I did not have to go on medication, I suffered very very much growing up, but it made me into a stronger person today. I took it as God's way to prepare me for life, which is a peice of cake, now, compared to what I lived growing up.
I am raising my children the way I wished I was raised with lots of love...not with material things, but with hugs and kisses and love, they even sleep with me sometime.

Is that so bad?

If the assumption that the child is taking the drug for stuttering. I highly doubt it.

Everyone's experience will vary.

He was put on the Effexor for severe anxiety
due to a particular situation in his life. He
has ADHD and possibly Tourette's Syndrome
(thus, the stuttering). The stuttering has just
been made worse by the Effexor (I believe).

When I started effexor it made my heart beat rapidly. This is a common occurence with this medication and goes away with time. I'm wondering out loud if perhaps the medication has a stimulating effect on what ever is causing the stuttering. Effexor has helped me with anxiety. Discuss it with his psychiatrist, make a phone call before the next appointment if you feel it is necessary.

I've been taking EffexorXR for a few days now and I'm experiencing the exact same thing. I just started on 75 (in addition to 150 Wellbutrin 2x day) for depression and anxiety. So far have had side effects ranging from insomnia (I lay in bed awake the entire first night I took it), queasiness, tremors, a "spacy" feeling, and a strange inability to express myself verbally. I start sentences and forget what I was going to say or I have the word in my head but can't get it out or I forget simple everyday words. I'm not usually very eloquent, but this is pretty bizarre. I literally have been unable to speak a single phrase without stumbling over the words. I hear there are a ton of side effects from Effexor that usually go away, but I don't know how much longer I can deal with this one. I'm seeing my pdoc on Mon and am going to try to figure out what the deal is. I've also had pretty bad reactions or severe side effects to Paxil, Zoloft, Neurontin, Buspar, Risperdal, and Zyprexa before finally settling into Wellbutrin. This doesn't really help anxiety much which is what the effexor is for, but I might have to jump ship on that as well. Good luck, I'll let you know what my doc says.
