I started taking effexor about 4 weeks ago. I felt great, I was more positive, had more energy, and was much happier. My doctor then switched me over to effexor XR so I would only be taking one pill a day instead of one in the morning and one in the evening. After one week on XR I crashed. I became more deppresed than ever, couldn't sleep, irritable, no energy, and finally suicidal. I went back to my doctor and she put me back on effexor two times a day. Within 2 hours I was feeling much better and was actually able to think rationally again. Has anyone else had problems with XR? My doctor is thinking about putting me on another brand of anti-deppresents. Has anyone had success with any other types? I scared to go off effexor again. Any advice or comments are very much appreciated since this is all new to me. Thanks, Wendi

I switched from Effexor to Effexor XR and needed more of the XR to feel the same effect. Maybe that's why you crashed...you were not taking enough of the XR.

> Do you increase the dosage of the once a day pill or do you take the XR twice a day? I'm still trying to figure out how this all works. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Wendi - The main difference between Effexor and Effexor XR is the halflife of each agent. Effexor needs to be taken 3 times daily, while most people can get by with a once daily dosing of the XR (some people do need to take the XR twice daily). Failure to maintain adequate blood levels of Effexor (or the XR) can put one at risk for the withdrawl syndrome. In our clinic, the vast majority (if not all) of Effexor prescriptions are now written for the XR version. The regular Effexor requires more diligence in following an exact dosing schedule, which can be a pain in the ass, and may affect compliance.
I hope that this is of some help. - Cam

I WAS ON EFFEXOR XR 75 MG AT BEDTIME BUT MY DOCTOR ACIDENTLY PRESCRIBED EFFEXOR 75MG AT BEDTIME WHICH I STILL TAKE ONLY EFFEXOR XR 75 MG SAME TIME BEDTIME. I KNOW THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN THE HALF LIFE OF MEDICATIONS SO I GUES I BETTER TAKE EFFEXOR 75MG AT BEDTIME & EFFEXOR 75MG TWICE A DAY(12 HOURS LATERS SINCE THE HALF LIFE WILL BE DIFFERNET UNTIL IGET IN TOUCH WITH THE PHARMACY WHICH IS IN MSSACHUSETTES I LIVE IN PA. ALSO I DON'T THINK THEY CAN TAKE THE MEDICATION BACK SINCE I RECIEVED IT. WILL CONTACT MY DOCTOR IN A.M CONCERNING THIS DOSAGE ISUE SO HE IS AWARE. I WORK AS A NUCLEAR MEDICNE TECHNOLOGIST & A FAMILIAR THAT EVERY MEDICATION EVEN RADIOPHRAMCETUICALS HAVE HAL LIVES SO THAT IS WHY I THINK I BETTER TAKE THE EFFEXOR 75MG B.I.D (TWICE /DAY TO GET SAME DOSAGE
