Wellbutrin side effects

Posted by Jaysi on July 31, 2001, at 1:06:11

I am new to this so please bear with me. I have been on 6 different antidepressants now and Wellbutrin seems to be doing the best. Although I am not sure of the type of depression I have, I know some need seratonin levels adjusted and then some need dopamine is it? Anyway I am taking 150mg 2x daily of Wellbutrin and I have been on it for 5 months now and I DO NOT SLEEP!!! I have the worst insomnia. Has anyone else had this?I have tried every option to help me sleep except ask for prescription sleeping pills for two reasons:
First I hate the groggy feeling they give you the next day.
Second I recently overdosed on prescription sleeping pills.
HELP!!!

First of all, did you INTENTIONALLY OD on sleeping pills? If not, there are many options available to help you sleep. The mild benzo Tranzene has helped me get to sleep while on Wellbutrin (note: try to take your second dose of WB at least 7-8 hours before going to sleep, it is ok to take WB SR if you have 6 hours between dosing, though 8 hrs. is recommended). You could go to Ambien or Sonata, neither is a benzo, they are C IV controlled substances. You can become tolerant of their therapeutic use over time. Sonata will only give you about 4 hours sleep, then paradoxically will wake you up. It is best used if you wake up and can't get back to sleep, but have at least 4 hours before you have to get up. Ambien works a bit longer, but it is easier to get "hooked" on. I vote for the benzo as long as you do not increase dosage. You can switch between different benzos if you become tolerant to the effects of one. Be careful with clonopin, it worked ok for me, but some here have had bad results with it. Valium is of little use. Other benzo hypnotics are really only meant for transient insomnia, and you WILL develope "addiction" to them over time.

do you take your second dose too late in the evening? i would look for that for starters. that will keep you up for sure, even if you are able to go off to sleep at bedtime...you will probably find yourself waking up after 4 hours. i have had others advise taking the second dose no later that 2pm in the afternoon; 5pm if that is just how it has to be. you might try that.

also, i applaud your wisdom in knowing your limitations (ie: overdosages) i've tried a variety of prescriptive meds for sleep (wellbutrihn is my "main med") you might try drinking chamomile tea at bedtime (i was surprised recently to see that this does in fact work..... i did make mine double strength.. smile) and i have also had success with the herb valerian in capsule form at bedtime. these are two other suggestions. -terra

Thank you so much Terra!! I have been taking my second dose at 7:00pm!! I had no idea. I will definately try taking it much earlier in the day.
I did try things like Tylenol PM or even Benadryl to help with the sleeping but they really have not helped. Even a glass of wine didnt make me tired! I do have the chamomile tea and I will try the two bags. Thank you so much, it is such a relief to know there are people out there that know what I am talking about!! Sleeping soon I hope-Jaysi

that sounds familiar. when you take a dose that late it's almost like you have to get completely snookered to get sleep, which you don't really want to do.... because even then you're just inebriated and STILL awake! if you take your morning dose early, you should be able to take your second dose much earlier in the afternoon.

Hope to hear you're back on sleep schedule. -terra
