Thanks

I use to take Depakote (125 mg 2 x day) in combination with Welbutrin (150 mg day). I felt better than I had in years. When I took the Depakote by itself I cried nonstop. I am now only on the Welbutrin, but will probably get back on the depakote. I tend to be impulsive and in high gear and worrisome without it. My life is more balanced on it. I had no side effects, but I was on a very low dose. Good luck. (I didn't take the "ER" type.)

To paraphrase my pdoc, when I asked him recently if I should consider taking ER (extended release), 'damn those drug companies! Always dreaming up new ways to make more money. Depakote has a sustained release character in the brain already.' I have taken the enteric coated (so dissolves past the stomach) in 6 months or so, no weight gain, some additional hairs lost, and it has helped even my moods out. The highs aren't so high. I am not well, but I am not in the closet or raiding the bank either. Dr Bobs tips are very good.

I think your doctor is wrong for thinking that the ER formulation is just another way to make money. It is a 24 hour clean and smooth way to take Depakote without any side-effects, thus a useful weapon in the armamentarium. (I took it for a few months without side-effects).
