Itchy and agitated on wellbutrin???

Posted by Lolita on June 9, 2001, at 22:17:36

Help! I started wellbutrin last week, and have been donsing down off of celexa for three weeks. It has been awful! The last few days I have been itching like crazy. Not always like a bug bit or dry skin itch, but more like a cobweb brushing against you or mostly like tiny bigs crawling all lover. It is driving me nuts. not to mention I am scratching my head all the time. I had my hair checked for lice three times, and of course there are none. there is no skin irritation at all. Also I read once that Wellbutrin can make you really agitated, which I have been towards my best friend the past two days. I have felt restless all night, yet completely uninterested in anything. ok I am ranting...all i need to know if anyone knows anything about the itching or if it is something else entirely. the withdrawal from celexa has been horrible, including poor vision, severe vertigo, vomiting, chills, constant nausea, diahrea....the list goes on and on. Could the itching be a part of that?
HELP!

don't stay in the shower too long or wash your hair too often, especially in hot water. protect your scalp from sunburn. keep your skin hydrated by drinking enough water and applying lotion. i fight the head thing lots, and i think it's more the shower thing. i also have thinned much over the last couple years which i don't attribute to the wellbutrin, so more scalp shows to get sunburnt. i have to be careful. if it gets too bad i think t-gel makes this great stuff for itching scalp that's not a dandruff-thing. i get the crawling skin, too. but i also don't attribute that to the wellbutrin; i think it's therapy issues. hope that helps. terra.

OK!! I started taking Wellbutrin last week, and I too have the itching!! Only I broke out in hives. My doc. took me off the wellbutrin, and advised me to take 100mg of Benadryl the antihistamine before bed. I'm also taking trazadone to help me sleep. Could there be some reaction b/w the trazadone and Wellbutrin. has anyone had hives? Do they go away after you body addjusts? I'd really like to give it another try, but don't want to itch my skin off! Any advise would be helpful! Thanks!

Don't take too much Benadryl or you will get urinary retention.

Wellbutrin made me agitated and slightly hallucinogenic. My skin felt itchy too I think it was a side effect of the wellbutrin
I broke out in a rash also, I also break out in rashes when I'm nervous or mad. I really don't think there is anything wrong with your skin. Wellbutrin increases dopaine in the brain
If a person already has enough dopamine than hallucinations and psychosis may occur. Schizophrenic people have higher levels of dopamine i their brains. That would explain why some
people have those symptoms with Wellbutrin
However it works great for people who have depression caused by low Dopamine levels in the brain.

i had hives daily on wellbutrin, but my doc didn't believe it was related to the drug. i finally asked to be taken off of it and the hives went away.

i did some internet "research" and i found that people can react to the dye in the drug as well as the slow release compound. were you on slow release? you might want to try the regular before giving up.

i had to lice checks too. everytime i saw my mother, she would notice me itching my head and insist on a lice check. i felt like i was 6 years old again.

funny thing you should mention trazadone. i take that too, off and on. i don't think the two are related, but one really can't be sure. when i was on wellbutrin, i would take trazadone about twice a week. who knows, i never thought of the correlation.

i do know that wellbutrin's itching drove me out of my mind. i was experiencing heavy itching and welts.

good luck, chiaratara

I'm guessing this is an allergic reaction. It's unusual, but not unknown. Did you try antihistamines (Benadryl, ChlorTrimeton, Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec, etc.)?

(Wellbutrin doesn't have any pharmacological effects that would be expected to lead to itching, although there's always the occasional idiosyncratic reaction that can't be explained.)

I had the same experience on Wellbutrin - it caused be to break out in hives all over my body. My doc didn't believe it was caused by Wellbutrin either, but the hives just got worse after a week. The hives went away after I stopped it.
