paxil and weight gain

Posted by jewel on July 8, 2001, at 10:17:38

I have heard so much about paxil causing weight gain. I was on zoloft for a short while and lost weight but gained some weight back on effexor xr I was wondering if anybody has had any good experiences with paxil and weight loss, has anybody actually lost weight while taking paxil. Heres hoping so!

I gained 20 lbs in 8 or 9 months, coming off of it I've only lost 2 lbs. Go to a paxil withdrawal message board before trying it so you know what to expect. A lot of people like myself are having one heck of a time getting off of it. I must also tell you that there are people who have luck with it also. I just haven't heard of many especially where weight is concerned. Good luck.

WHAT paxil withdrawal board??

I am just starting the tapering and it's really HARD. I was daydreaming about suing the mfgr. This is like quitting smoking, maybe worse.

Thanks--Patti

Great sites for those suffering paxil withdrawal. Come one, come all! It helps to ask questions and see how others are progressing and to even share your paxil nightmare.

THANK YOU LRC--you've saved me!!!

thank you so much, esp. the Paxil Database on the second board. Now I have an answer. I will ask the doct tomorrow for a prescrib to liquid Paxil for my taper.

And, I really didn't want Wellbutrin or Celexa. Now that article mentioned SAMe. I am very optomistic. You have NO idea how helpful you have been to me.

Hugs,

Pattisun

Dietary Supplements and Natural Products as Psychotherapeutic Agents
[Special Issue: Psychopharmacology And Psychosomatic Research]
Fugh-Berman, Adriane MD; Cott, Jerry M. PhD:

There is evidence of links among folate, tetrahydrobiopterin (an essential cofactor in the hydroxylation process in the mammalian brain), and monoamine metabolism in depression (119, 129). Tetrahydrobiopterin is necessary for the synthesis of serotonin and dopamine and has also been reported to have antidepressant activity (130). The methyl donor, SAMe, is closely linked with folate and vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) metabolism. SAMe is required in numerous transmethylation reactions involving nucleic acids, proteins, phospholipids, monoamines, and other neurotransmitters, and deficiencies of either folate or B12 have been found to reduce the synthesis of SAMe (and thus its levels) in the central nervous system (131).

The administration of SAMe has antidepressant properties (132–135) and, as added evidence, has been reported to induce mania in bipolar patients (136). Preliminary studies indicate that it may improve cognitive function in patients with dementia (131).

Adverse Effects and Interactions.
Tetrahydrobiopterin is not commercially available. SAMe has been reported to cause mild and transient insomnia, nervousness, lack of appetite, constipation, headaches, heart palpitations, nausea, dry mouth, sweating, and dizziness (135).
