dr bob and others:
i'm not sure what this site is for, but i've tried both zyprexa and resperdal. i gained a lot of weight using each at different times, but i was not eating more. Also i got bloated and edema.Anyone else have these symptoms? Also, anyone try depakote with paxil or either plus xanax. i think it depends on the severity of the anxiety and cause of anxiety...its origin, but it might be associated with other stuff...dr bob and others - i sure would like to hear your views, experiences, knowledge, etc thanks, brook

I don't know about the resperdol, but I gained 70 pounds in 7 months on zyprexa - and in the short time since I have found this site, I have read many posts of similar horror stories of weight gain on zyprexa. While my pdoc pointed out that zyprexa can be miraculous at times in breaking a really bad cycle of depression and distorted thinking (and it did help me greatly in those regards), she very much admitted that weight gain was very typical and very much a problem with this particular med. So I am not surprised that you experienced such a side effect.

Dr. Bob is too busy to answer every post himself...Perhaps you can ask your doctor about Seroquel or Geodon, which promise to have less weight gain.

How about Topamax; most people lose weight. Maybe it would help you. Ask your pdoc.

I got disillusioned by Topiramate's 'anti-anxiety efficacy' after reading this article (there very well may some evidence to the contrary of this article, too--but I haven't found it yet):
GORDON, ALAN MD. PRICE, LAWRENCE H. MD. Mood Stabilization and Weight Loss With Topiramate. American Journal of Psychiatry. 156(6):968-969, June 1999:
"...In these patients, the substitution of topiramate for valproate resulted in significant weight loss. Mr. A, with bipolar disorder, experienced no loss of thymoleptic efficacy; Ms. B, with unipolar depression and impulsivity, experienced increasing depression and anxiety. Anxiety has been reported as an adverse effect of topiramate [1]..."
This is the end of the thread.
