Gabitril (tiagabine HCL) share any info anyone?

Posted by terra miller on July 5, 2001, at 23:37:02

My pdoc just suggested gabitril as an alternative to longterm use of ativan. I know nothing about this drug. Can anyone elighten me? (Background: Have PTSD and so anxiety from triggers, etc. Using ativan 1mg 2xdy and wellbutrin ir 75mg 4xdy.) There's probably a good link out there somewhere and I think it's a newer? drug. Personally clueless. Not swallowing a thing without information. Thanks. -Terra

In my case Gabitril helped with the anergic depression, but also trigger the anxiety in me.
I you have a tendency toward anxiety, you should be careful.
Viagabatrin is probably helpful for anxiety.

Oh, SIGH! I don't need another drug that increases anxiety and helps depression. Drugs that help depression tend to make me depressed and suicidal and oversedated (read: dangerous) Anxiety has always been the issue with me and it's been an obnoxiously long story of pdoc advice for me. What is Viagabatrin? Thanks.

Terra,

You ought to suggest to your pdoc that he try some Topamax instead. There has been a least one study that showed some effectiveness for PTSD.

Thank you for your reply. I searched last night until my eyes crossed and found little information on this drug(gabitril) that seemed to be applicable to my issues. I can find little written about its use besides for anti-seizure conditions. The pdoc made a poor/flawed thinking case for connecting the mechanism of flashbacks and anxiety to seizures in the brain. (Perhaps someone else could explain it better if the connection is in fact to be made; the pdoc's explanation was full of errors and I've heard better logic from those who post here.)

I personally believe that flashbacks associated with PTSD give you "information to work with" in healing and are not things from which to run. A medicine, however, that can take the edge off the mounting anxiety which happens over the long haul at times (read: spouse/kids getting tired of irritable wife/mom *smile*) is helpful. Complete removal of anxiety/fight-flight mechanisms only postpones the inevitable work ahead in the healing process, I believe.

I am noticably frustrated. At least I understand how "plain old" ativan or xanax work.

SIGH!
