Risperidol weight gain -- Cam ? Eliz?anyone?

Posted by Zo on July 6, 2001, at 18:04:29

Pdoc just suggested low dose Risperidol as AD augment., to replace Zyprexa, on which I gained 40 lbs. in 6 happy, together months. . and also seems to have ruined my insulin response for good. Re-tried just .625 at bed recently,a months later, & same exaggerated hunger *pain* the next day, where there is *none* without Z.. Am 1 month into Atkins Diet, my body likes stable blood sugar, & moderate weight loss.

Am not only terrified the Risperidol will do the same, but am also very discouraged as Dr. Atkins says weight loss will NOT occur with these AP meds, even if one is in ketosis. . .because my body is sooo calm on the diet itself.

Sorry this isn't clearer, am still foggy from stopping Zyprexa again / depression rebound.

Current meds: Neurontin 600mg at bed for FM, sleep and TLE (caused some weight gain, but can't live without it - and its cravings, a year later, are over); 300 mg Effexor, 10-15 mg Dex for CFS & ADD (both fine in long term); 5-10mg Valium to *get* to sleep (chattering mind!) plus thyroid (incl. cytomel) and HRT.

Unusual for me to feel at a loss. . .any guidance appreciated.

Thanks,

Zo

Maybe you can try Seroquel or Geodon instead.

Go here: http://www.mentalhealth.ucla.edu/opce/gr.html
then go to "Metabolic Effects of Atypical Antipsychotics" and view that.

Sorry, should have said, tried Geodon. . .Zip. Nada. No weight gain but no effect either. Nothin' but a little fatigue.

But thanks for posting, Sal! You're a wonder. ..

Zo, you were taking zyprexa for sleep? And now you've changed to risperidol. Is that also for sleep? With any of these APs, even the newer atypical ones like zyprexa and risperidol, you ARE at some risk for TD. There must be something safer for sleep, wouldn't you think? I, for sure, wouldn't risk it, when there are other things that can help.
