How about Paxil to Celexa? Anyone???

Posted by Pattisun on July 3, 2001, at 2:16:24

Okay, I want to get off Paxil because of the nasty withdrawal symptoms (may not make sense, just pisses me off I've been scared to try other meds for 5 yrs because I'm scared of the withdrawal).

And, I hate all the weight I've gained (my two friends who take Paxil are as round as I am right now too).

So ... if I wanted to try another SSRI, what about Celexa?

Anyone on Celexa?

Anyone withdraw from Celexa? Was it bad?

Thanks for the input!

Patti

Hi Patti!
I too was on Paxil for many years with incredible weight gain and a non-existant sex drive.
I have since started Celexa last month.
I have been working out/watching what I eat/drinking TONS of water and taking B6 supplements for the water retention...I managed to keep the weight-gain at bay...somewhat...I still had a puffy face and puffy "man-hands"(very attractive..).
Since the Celexa, I have noticed a BIG difference in the "puffiness"...people can hardly recognize me because of the lack of it in my face...and my sex-drive has returned as well.....YIPPIE!!!!!!!
Sadly, my doctor is a major idiot, and he gave me the Celexa script without tapering the Paxil...the withdrawl from Paxil was horrible...I felt like SHIT...my head was somewhere else..so be careful with that.....ask your doctor to do the "tapering" thing with the Paxil!!!!!!
Another BIZARRO thing is that I have developed these swollen glands that won't go away...my doctor is NO help...thinks I am a hypochondriac...gives me anti-biotics...antihistamines...to no avail..they are still there as I type and it is kind of freaking me out...I am looking for a new doctor, but here in Ontario, Canada, doctors taking new patients are hard to come by....so I have no idea what to do...
Good luck to you and let me know how it goes!

I take Celexa and it works very well for me. It did not make me gain weight. Neither did Prozac when I was on that. I know that Paxil does make some people gain weight. Celexa could also do that but I think it's usually not as bad as with Paxil.

Are you feeling good with Paxil? If the answer is yes then you have a tough decision to make. There is no guarantee that Celexa will work better for you than Paxil. But if the weight gain is really a big issue then maybe it's worth the risk to switch.

But I don't think that you should switch just because of future withdrawal problems. If you taper off gradually you should be fine.

I really don't think after almost 6 years the Paxil is doing much for me, except has me addicted and scared of the withdrawals. But, I've already started my descent in getting off of it.

I'd like to have NO meds.

If I have to try something else, I will ask for Wellbutrin SR first to see how that does.
Then, as a last resort, Celexa.

But, docts may have different theory. I am changing docts and am going from thyroid disease (and getting that under control) to what I have now which is Fibromyalgia. I am exhausted all the time and hurt all the time. So, I'll have to see what the pain specialist/ rheumatologist suggests.

Thanks for the feedback!

Patti
