Remeron question for Sal et al

Posted by Amy Blue on June 29, 2001, at 22:10:57

My doctor prescribed me Remeron for insomnia. NOT for depression or anxiety. Is this normal? She said it's been "indicated" as treatment for insomnia recently? She doesn't want to prescribe Ambien b/c she said insomnia will only return upon disuse. She also said that REmeron will re-set my sleep cycle so if I take it every day for 3 months I should be back on track.

Does this make sense, any info on Remeron as sleep aid, not as A/D?

Totally different topic - ever heard of "Flextra" for a pain med? I can't read the script and can't find it anywhere. I think it's new b/c doc said some pharmacies don't have it yet? I've been given this for intense, but infrequent, tension headaches.

Thanks to all w/ any opinions at all on this -
Amy Blue

Yeah, it sure is.

> She said it's been "indicated" as treatment for insomnia recently?

I don't know that it's been approved for insomnia by the FDA, but it's certainly a common use for the drug.

> She doesn't want to prescribe Ambien b/c she said insomnia will only return upon disuse.

Sure. Same with Remeron. Remeron is just a very strong antihistamine. It won't cure your insomnia, just treat it.

> She also said that REmeron will re-set my sleep cycle so if I take it every day for 3 months I should be back on track.

Go ahead and try it, but I'm skeptical. Let us know what happens, ok?

Flexeril, maybe? (Tricyclic-like, used as a muscle relaxant but not very effective.)

I dunno. Can you find out the generic name from your doc?

Radhakishun, Fenny S. PhD. Mirtazapine Effects on Alertness and Sleep in Patients as Recorded by Interactive Telecommunication During Treatment With Different Dosing Regimens. Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology. 20(5) Oct 2000:

"Patients receiving the fixed dose {of mirtazapine} reported earlier sleep onset and longer duration. Similar mean changes in HAM-D scores (approximately -40%) and frequencies of CGI responders ( >50%) occurred in both groups. The regimens were equally well tolerated. Somnolence, the most frequent side effect, was reported by only 10% of each group during the first week and by fewer patients during the second. Mirtazapine in fixed and ascending nocturnal dosing regimens was found to facilitate sleep, but it does not generally reduce daytime alertness. The fixed regimen seems preferable because of its greater effects on sleep..."

Thanks for the info.

Elizabeth - I am still looking for info on flextraDS. I got my prescription but I can't find it online anywhere. Scary?!! It's manufactured by Poly Pharma, and the pills say "flextraDS" on one side and "POLY 500" on the other.

It's Tylenol (acetaminophen/paracetamol) with a mild muscle relaxant, phenyltoloaxamine.

For future reference: you can identify drugs by imprint code by going to www.rxlist.com and doing an "advanced search."

Sure. The search engine is a little tricky to use, but once you get the hang of it, it can be very useful.
