Weaning off of Effexor XR

Posted by Autumn Despotis on June 16, 2001, at 14:33:57

I was scared to wean myself off of effexor based on what I had read in here, and most of you were right. It is a hell I wish I hadn't had the opportunity of visiting.
I feel like I am dying, slowly, but surely, dying. I don't necessarily mind this, I seem to have lost the will to live. I didn't have much in that dept. to begin with.
How am I supposed to get out of this hole they've thrown me into now?
I see a new psychiatrist on tuesday, she's the one who wants me off the effexor, says it makes my bipolar disorder worse. But what good is worse if I'm not alive? How have you dealt with this? Help me here, please!!??!!

That's odd because one of the signs of bipolarity is a selectively better response to Effexor: http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/split/Possible-indications-of-bi.html

Look into some Benadryl or one-dose Prozac for withdrawal symptoms: http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/split/Antidepressant-discontinua.html

Oh, the other thing that's pretty useful for Effexor-related nausea is over-the-counter Emetrol.

Thanks! I read about the effects, so now I don't know who to believe!

No worries, Autumn, you're certainly NOT the first person not to have the predicted response to a given medication. *shrug* I can sum it up with 4 little letters...YMMV. Your Mileage May Vary. Everyone is different. If everything worked as predicted, most of us would only ever have tried one medication in our lives. ;)

Hang in there...and check with your fav pharmacist or Pdoc about taking St John's wort if you can't/won't do the prozac... people said it was bad to take that while weaning off Effexor, but I thought it did the same thing as Prozac only milder, and I took it with no ill effects in fact, my withdrawal wasn't that bad.

anyway, check it out.

My thoughts are with you....

It's only too true AD's can set you off cycling. Just had the experience for the last six months. On my own initiative I halved Zoloft down to 50mg. End of cycling. However, it's bittersweet- back came social anxiety. By the barrelful. But cycling will stop and that might eventually relieve depression
