Does anyone know which medication is more likely to induce weight gain or if together the weight gain is worse.
My doctor want to add Depakote to Lithium so that the lithium dosage can be decreased due to cognitive problems.
He says weight gain on Depakote is half of Lithium. Is this so? Also together is the weight gain potentiated.

Armond, A. D.. Lithium and weight gain. British Journal of Psychiatry. 169(2):251-252, Aug 1996:
"...a quarter of patients do not put on weight at any stage (Vestergaard et al, 1990) and that a quarter become obese (Chen & Silverston, 1990). Consequently the BNF mentions weight gain as a problem. This was investigated in a lithium clinic where in 17 years no patient had dropped out because of weight gain."

I have personally gained substantial weight on lithium first time one it. This time around only 5 pounds. I am mainly interested in whether anyone knows of the relative weight gain on lithium vs. depakote.
