EFFEXOR POOP-OUT !!!

Posted by SLS on May 28, 2001, at 15:56:34

Sorry for all of the yelling. :-)

For some reason, few people have ever bothered to participate in my previous attempts at surveying different issues. I took a shower today, brushed my teeth, and used my deodorant, so I know that if no one participates here, it will be because the post stinks.

I don't have the energy to read every post, but if I'm not mistaken, Effexor doesn't seem to poop-out for people who respond well to it. Some have needed to increase their dosage occasionally, but I don't find posts that complain about its pooping-out completely or relapsing.

So here's the question:

Does Effexor poop-out?

The SSRIs can.

It would be important to determine if Effexor is significantly less likely to stop working than Prozac or the other SSRIs.

The results of this question will be most meaningful if answered by people who:

1. Feel that Effexor has produced a remarkable improvement such that they feel almost normal or that it has allowed them to regain a substantial degree of improvement in depressed mood, sadness, rumination, motivation, energy, return to interests and hobbies, initiating activities, satisfaction or pleasure derived from activities, functionality at home and at work, ability to concentrate, assertiveness, self-esteem, etc....

2. Have felt substantially well for at least 6 months. One remains eligible as a responder if, after relapsing, they are able to regain the improvement by simply adjusting the dosage.

3. Have taken Effexor continuously up until poop-out or relapse such that no dosage adjustment can recapture the antidepressant response.

4. Take no other antidepressants, stimulants, Lamictal, or antipsychotics.

* For anyone who has had Effexor poop-out on them, please include the maximum dosage that you had tried.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that some people don't respond well to Effexor until the dosage is brought up to at least 600mg per day.

I am grateful to anyone who contributes to this survey.

:-)

Thanks.

Poop Out....Myth or Reality.............

Scott,

I am sorry you are feeling neglected....it seems like when we need answers most sometimes they just don't come.

This is my observation after 3 years on meds and 3 years of itensive research on the internet. The people who are doing well on their meds and dosages are not on the internet....they are happy well adjusted folks living a fullfilling life. Most of the people, myself included, who spend a lot of time reading posts and staying on the internet are still in search of some med or combo that will set them free from their demons so to speak so you will get more negativity than positive stories. There appears to be huge amount of med jumping and or changing in hopes of some cure or "bad-aid" Oh no no that again.

To your question about poop out. I have many friends on different AD'S doing great. I am a recovering alcoholic and many of my firends found out after getting sober thewy had underlying mentat health isuues in need of meds. I know one guy who has been on the same dose of Effexor for 3 years and is doing great....no tolerance or poop out. His life is going very well in all aspects. I have another friend who has been on and off of Prozac for 12 years and has experienced the sam effectiveness at the same dose. I have another friend on Prozac and Effexor together after a serious depressive episode with hospitalization and has been doing great for about 18 months again no dosage increases from original titrations. All my real life friends are all doing wonderfull on their meds and don't seem to have the problem I do finding the right one or with no side effects. I think that poop out is much more common on the internet than in real life. Real life success stories do not take the time out of their newly found happy existences to tell us about it....they simply live.

Now my disclaimer.....their are some wonderfull people here who are doing well and for altruistic reasons answer stupind nagging questions from needy people like me in order that we might get comfort or get pointed in the right direction.....I.E Cam, John L., Salarmy, Lorraine, Grapebubblegum, Fred Potter, etc.etc, etc,

I hope this helps.

Gil

Thank you. It has. I have definitely lost any sense of how well these drugs work in "real life" in the general population. The success stories that you have described went a long way to help acquaint me with how frequently occurs non-treatment-resistant depression. What a novel concept - depression that is not treatment-resistant. Who would have thunk? :-)

I think you are right. After I wrote my "inclusion criteria", I realized that I knew of almost no one on PB who would meet them. I guess I should revise the question so that it doesn't require any conditions of eligibility.

Thanks for responding. I have an appointment with my doctor today. At my last visit, we were trying to decide whether to go next with Nardil or Effexor. I leave in about an hour. I am still on the fence.

Effexor can poop-out. Sometimes all it needs is an increase in dosage - be sure to get your TSH checked (see my other posts on this)

As for me, I just stopped Effexor to try an MAOI. Not so much that it pooped out - it was increasingly giving me memory problems - that have gone away with discontinuing the drug.
