Lower cost meds from drug companies?

Posted by Kingfish on April 19, 2001, at 10:04:46

I have heard from a friend that drug companies offer medications at a discount for those who need it if their doctors write a letter or something of the sort. Does anyone know about this?

Thanks!

- K.

Not first hand, but I had talked to my doctor about weaning off effexor because I may quit my job and move and would have no insurance. He said not to worry, drug companies will work with people who need thier meds. Yeah I bet they will! but that's another story. So anyway, it sounds doable.

Kingfish--

Check out http://www.needymeds.com

A word re Effexor: Wyeth can be slow. You might ask your pdoc to request the form *now* so that you both can fill it out as soon as you're sure you'll be without insurance. S/he may have samples that can tide you over until Wyeth comes through.

Good luck---medlib

Hi K,

I believe you are referring to the "Patient Assistance Programs" or PAPs for medications. All drug companies (well, almost all) have their own PAP for patients who are unable to afford their prescribed medications. Some PAPs only provide temporary assistance. Although I know of a patient on Risperdal who has been continuously enrolled with Janssen's PAP for at least the past 2 years. You will need your doctor's cooperation on this matter.

The following is a list of drug companies that run PAPs (not complete). For more info, ask your prescriber who should know about them.

1. Zoloft - Available from Pfizer Co.

2. Paxil - Available from SmithKline Beecham Co.

4. Celexa - Available from Forest Pharmaceutical Inc.

5. Remeron - Available from Organon Co.

6. Effexor - Available from the Wyeth-Ayerst Co.

7. Wellbutrin - Available from GlaxoWellcome Pharmaceuticals.

8. Serzone - Available from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.

9. BuSpar - Available from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.

10. Risperdal - Available from Janssen Co.

11. Zyprexa - Available from Eli Lilly Co.

12. Seroquel - Available from AstraZeneca Co.

13. Lithobid - Available from Solvay Co.

14. Depakote - Available from Abbott Labs.

15. Neurontin - Available from Parke-Davis Co.

I don't know if Pfizer has a PAP, yet for Geodon. Most likely they will if it's not in place, yet.
