Insomnia

Posted by Thrud on April 14, 2001, at 21:49:04

Hi all.

I have a persistant problem with ADs, no matter what class they are from: insomnia. Even heavily sedating ADs give it to me. I can best describe it as a radio that is left switched on in my head when I am sleeping, except that it is my own random thoughts and I can't switch it off except by stopping my medication. I've tried sleeping with music or the TV on to try and drown it out but to no avail.
Does anyone have the same problem, and if so did you overcome it somehow? I'd like to know, since it drives me nuts (as if I were not nuts enough already?)

Thanks.

Thrud

Yes, I SWEAR, I am so relaxed on caffeine, Starbucks is like a God-send for me. I can have 5 caffeinated beverages at this point in time and umm, they actually help me to stop worrying. In fact, when I feel depressed, I have to drink a coffee. 1 coffee a day for me can mean the difference between being depressed, hopeless and helpless to quite productive and inteligent. at night, especially after 8pm, coffee is a life saver, esp. strong Starbucks/Second Cup stuff! I sleep better.

Your doctor might prescribe an atypical neuroleptic like Zyprexa or Seroquel to help you sleep by shutting the thoughts up. This is becoming common practice now. I have taken them both.

I agree with the suggestion of Zyprexa. Don't wait for the doc to prescribe it. Instead, ask for it. 2.5mg to 5mg. I've tried everything out there, and nothing has been as good for sleep as Zyprexa, for me anyway. Other supposedly sedating meds, like Trazodone, Serzone, Remeron, Nortriptyline, actually made my sleep worse. I like Zyprexa for a whole lot of things, including sleep.

Is Zyprexa known to be effective for depression and anxiety? What about it's side effects (esp sexual dysfunction)?
Thanks.

In reply to Re: Insomnia Zyprexa, posted by Thrud on April 15, 2001, at 6:12:37

Zyprexa has been proven to have effects on serotonin, thus it can augment antidepressants. Another study confirmed that last year. Psychiatrists have been using it off-label for OCD, too.

Here are the advantages of Zyprexa, as opposed to most antipsychotics and antidepressants:

--It will calm you down all day; when I took it, I thought it was better than a benzo.
--It has no anticholinergic effects.
--It has no sexual side-effects .
--It will definitely help you sleep.
--Zyprexa is convienient because it is taken only once at night.
--It is covered by insurance, generally.
--It augments antidepressants.
--Despite what rumors go around, Tardive Dyskenisia on Zyprexa is rare.

I took 10 mg of it at bedtime, and I had no drowsiness in the morning. I didn't have any weight gain either.

LOL I'm not the only one like I thought! HEhe, well my friend gets all wired and can't sleep until 5-6hrs after caffeine consumption. Meds often have awesome results on me and some have no result. My anti-depressant appears to be preventing my allergies from coming into full swing!

I also have a radio going in my head. Most of the time I can't understand what is being said but when I can, it is like you said ... random thoughts. I am taking Seroquel 150mg and it seems to be working. I still have the radio but it not as intrusive. Good luck keep us posted.
