Efexor XR to Paxil cold turkey? anybody?

Posted by PaulW on April 14, 2001, at 5:03:05

Hi,
anybody out there ever switched from FXR to Paxil?
Have been taking FXR for nearly 7 weeks now and just feel in my heart and mind that maybe this is not for me. The depression has lifted slightly but it's lingering ominously. I just know. I am still shying away from almost everything, which is not 'normal', even for me!

Paxil has worked for me before, and was first choice this time round. It failed miserably, merely exacerbating the anxiety. However, if the FXR has made some sort of breakthrough, maybe I could try an immediate switch?

Anybody any experience of this?

Any comments much appreciated

Paul

You said that the depression has lifted slightly with Effexor, and that makes me think that you can "jumpstart" it with an augmentation agent. Lithium, T4, buspirone, or pindolol could work well. Some may even work within a few days:

Thanks for the advice.
Trouble is twofold...
The depression appears to have bitten back again over the last couple of days.

Also, I'm not sure whether my doc is altogether familiar and/or supportive of augmentation.I live in England and I get the impression that we are not as advanced in supporting mental illness either. I take it you reside in the USA?

I mentioned the possibility of augmenting it last appt. and he cast the notion aside, with a somewhat perplexed look and suggested I continue battering the FXR.

Thanks again.

I'm willing to bet that Lithium will restore the efficacy of your Effexor, and you will know for sure within at most 2 weeks. Its up to you whether you would bet on it too...

I doubt that English regular psychiatrists are less advanced than American ones, but if that turns out to be true somehow, you could always go see a psychopharmacologist (more money, but more knowledgeable guys).

The best of luck to you...

Hello PaulW,
I am in UK also take effexor and my pdoc gave me buspar[buspirone]for sexual problems but after a year the sexual problem just dissapeared so I had lots of buspar left.On one particular miserable night i took 20mg [felt like effexor wasn't working]and later the next day the effexor kicked back in.
