Xanax.Trazodone, or what for Sleeping????

Posted by Joy on April 12, 2001, at 19:15:16

Hi. I am taking .75 generic Xanax; sometimes 1 mg for AD induced somnia. I take 40 mg of Prozac which works well. I am taking generic Xanax about 4 or 5 months. I never take it in the daytime. Should I try Trazodone?
It's counsin, Serzone, was a lousy AD for me, but a lot of people, including my friend swear by Trazdone for sleeping. What about Remeron? I don't like Ambien, 10 mg barely works and I'm up in 4 hours and can't go back to sleep. I wake up with the Xanax but usually can go back to sleep. Is it safe; should I switch. I see my pdoc in 3 weeks. Any suggestions what I should ask for? What about another benzo? No? Any opinions out there? Thanks, guys/gals.

Joy,
I've been taking 150 mg Trazodone for sleep for about 7 years. It has worked very well for me.

Have you thought about over-the-counter stuff like plain old Benadryl or Tylenol Simply Sleep?

Another option that you may not have thought of is the atypical neuroleptics Risperdal, Zyprexa, or Seroquel. These have been successfully used as sleep aids and as antianxiety agents--I took them all at one time or another for that purpose. Seroquel was my favorite.

I think that I would try the Trazodone before Remeron if sleep is the only problem. I'm assuming that your depression is under control because you said that the 40 mg of Prozac is working well.

I've tried zyprexa, ambien, xanax, traz, among others. Both zyprexa and traz worked fine initially, but both quit working as a sleep aid relatively quickly when used several nights in a row. I did not like either of these.

10 mg Ambien worked better, though also pooped out soon; it did NOT cause next day fogginess/drowsiness like both traz and zyprexa. I never did get much of a tolerance to xanax for sleep (.5-1 mgs), and it worked as equally well as ambien. I'd still use it if I had a prescription for it. Unfortunatley I don't and instead just stay up and read newsgroups all night :)

I used xanax for about 2-3 months as needed (about 3-4 times/week) and never really developed an addiction, which is not too regular for me.
