Dr. Bob, what do you think about FEELING GOOD?

Posted by Diane J. on March 31, 2001, at 22:37:10

Dear Dr. Bob,
I was wondering what you think about Dr. David Burns' book FEELING GOOD. I am asking because although he is a psychiatrist, he has a conflict with the idea that drug companies are funding the research on antidepressant medications. In his book he acknowledges that people with long-standing and chronic depressions need the medication, but he also puts forward 10 cognitive distortions that form the basis of depression, and there are exercises one can do to help oneself.

I like Dr. Burns and what he says, but I realize everyone has their own feelings about this kind of thing. Any comments?

Sincerely,

Diane J.

Yes, a lot of drugs are tested and proven by the drug companies funding. But if universities take up the endeavor prove that a certain medications works AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN--the medication is worthy and thus it becomes a worthy treatment. For instance, there is no more scientific, double-blind hard evidence to prove that anything other than IMIPRAMINE will work better for the most number of affective disorders. Although, fluoxetine has been proven again and again and again to work for disorders and is catching up to imipramine.
