finished with wellbutrin - any ideas?

Posted by e503 on March 20, 2001, at 23:04:57

Molly could not stop itching again today. So, we stopped the Wellbutrin. I am totally bummed out about this because it was the first time that she actually stopped picking at her skin or biting her nails all year (she takes a total of 20 mg. ritalin a day). It really seemed to be doing the job. My doc is out of town until monday......does anyone have any ideas about what to supplement ritalin with? Paxil and zoloft were horrible. She was VERY depressed from them and withdrawn. HELP!!!!!!!!

Here's a long shot, but some people believe they are allergic to the dyes in Wellbutrin rather than the drug itself (there have been some threads on this topic fairly recently). The reason I mention this is that when I was starting Wellbutrin by gradually increasing the dose, I found that I had a couple of small localized areas of itchy hive-like welts for a couple of days after starting the yellow ones (75 mg?) and the 150 mg SR, which were purplish. In each case the effect went away after a two or three days, and was fairly mild, so I just kept going and never mentioned it to my doctor until later (I REALLY wanted to have a chance to try Wellbutrin). This never happened with the 100 mg SR (blue) which I'm taking now. Maybe this was just because my body had adjusted to the drug by then, but it did make me wonder a bit when I read about other people suffering hives and itching from certain dosages of WB. I seem to remember people mentioning the purple 150's in particular.

So, a real long shot, but had Molly been taking the 150 mg tabs? Or has she taken the blue 100 mg ones?

It is a real bummer when you can't reach your doc. Good luck.

Oh well, I guess it was a long shot. There are other people on this board who might be able to offer more specific feedback on other AD's. I hope you find what you need soon, and best wishes.
