Zyprexa a good thing ...

Posted by willow on March 14, 2001, at 13:10:47

My father has had schizphrenia for a longtime and was treated with an injectable medication for the past ten years which caused severe TD. It has been a year since he has been on the injections and has shown slight improvement in the negative symptoms of the illness. He has tried the risperdone but wasn't compliant and now is taking the zyprexa. It has been less than a week and he is showing improvement in the negative symptoms for the first time in over twenty years. : ) I just hope all keeps going well!

I know it is too early to judge the total outcome, but will keep you posted of how he does if anyone is interested.

Willow,

This is wonderful news about your Dad! It's effect on him is obviously having a good effect on your spirits as well. I've been taking Zyprexa for awhile for BP II and the peace of mind it has brought me is worth it's weight in gold.

I hope your Dad continues his improvement!

Be well,
Greg

how long the light-headedness lasted if you had it? He's just started on 5mg. I have been concerned with it's affects on the heart. Have you heard any adverse affects? And yes it is nice to see him up and about. Twenty years of comatose, can you imagine?!

Hi Willow

I had a little light-headedness for the first few days and then it went away. It wasn't ever severe, just a little goofier than normal :) I take the minimum dose of the Zy (2.5mgs). Depending on the severity and type of the symptoms, the dose can be significantly higher for some people. The only real side effect I've had is some fatigue. I take it with neurontin, so I don't know if it's the Zy or a combo of the two. My psych added a minimal dose of Adderall recently which really helped with the fatigue.

I am really so thrilled that your Dad is having such good results with this. Whenever you hear a story like this it gives hope to people and I really appreciate you sharing it with us. Please keep letting me know how your Dad, and you are doing.
