Ziprasidone (Geodon) - available next week

Posted by SLS on March 1, 2001, at 13:07:24

I spoke to a representative at Pfizer today. I was told that ziprasidone will appear on pharmacists' shelves towards the middle of next week.

Ziprasidone, under the brand name "Geodon" is a neuroleptic antipsychotic that is very similar to Zyprexa. One of the main advantages of Geodon is that it is said not to produce weight-gain.

Although Geodon has been developed and tested for its effectiveness in treating schizophrenia, there is hope that it might also help treat difficult cases of resistant depression by filling a role similar to Risperdal and Zyprexa. Both of these drugs have worked wonders for some people when used in conjunction with antidepressants. Geodon might even be a better drug for depression due to its unique action at a specific kind of serotonin receptor.

deej - Pfizer's trying but I think they want to use Europe and the U.S. as guinea pigs before inflicting it on us. Actually, I think that they are in the final stages here in Canada, but that may still mean another year or two. Hopefully it will be more like six months. I know that the clinical trials have been done in Canada. I think that the feds are so backlogged with drug approvals, that if the drug is not substantially better than existing therapies, it is put on the back burner. I believe this to be the case with mirtazapine (Remeron) which should have been released 3 years ago.

With Health Canada it is hard to tell what they are thinking. They are still in defensive mode due to that thalidomide episode. Now, they are overly cautious on what they release.

To answer your question if I know anything about this: "Nope". - Cam
