Viagra for Sexual Dysfunction caused by Celexa?

Posted by bonnie_ann on February 23, 2001, at 17:53:47

New here. I've been taking Celexa since January. My Doctor recently tried adding Wellbutrin to help with the sexual problems (not helping). Today he told me to stop the Wellbutrin and take a 50mg tablet of Viagra before sex.
Any of you females have sucess with the addition of Viagra? Is 50mg too high? or just right?
Please share,
Bonnie

Hi bonnie ann,

I can tell you that viagra can help with physical feelings, but not with desire. If celexa hasn't taken away your desire, then viagra could help you achieve orgasm.

Other viable choices are buspirone or mirtazapine. Adding mirtazapine to antidepressants is the only way I have been able to achieve orgasm. Wellbutrin worked only 50% of the time, according to Dr. Bob's Colleagues in the Tips.

Bonnie - I'm a male. I take Celexa along with SAM-e. I had orgasm problems but it got better after a few months. Since you just started in January, it will probably get better eventually.

Hopefully the Viagra will help. If not, do you also have either anxiety or sleep problems? If you do, then maybe Remeron would be an option since that can help with sexual side effects.

Also Ginko Biloba helps some people but it may take a month to kick in. You might want to also give Benedryl a try (over the counter antihistamine) . Take 25 mg (or up to 50) an hour before bed since it will make you drowsy. If it works, it will probably work the next morning.

The Viagra didn't do a thing but make me light headed and dizzy and my ears were ringing.
I'm not too keen on Remeron because it makes you incredibly hungry (my friend tried it) I'm thinking maybe asking my Dr to switch me over slowly to Wellbutrin- or I have some BuSpar left over from the fall- How much Do I need to take
Salarmy4me?
Thanks,
Bonnie

Viagra didn't help me either...and made me feel
yucky. How much Celexa do you take? When I took
it, I found 2 things worked for the orgasm problems.
1) I would take only 10 mg's a day for a few days
and that would help, and I would increase it if I
felt myself getting depressed 2) I would take "drug
holidays" from it, since it dosen't stay in your system
that long. I wouldn't take it friday, sat, or sun. and
then would resume monday. That helped. You have to
be careful though, b/c when you just stop taking it, it
makes you feel kind of nauseous (at least it did me).
These drugs, I swear :-P

Hi Bonnie

Sorry to hear the Viagra didn't help, though I was going to suggest that you start at 25mg not 50, as 'woozy' side effects can be quite bad, especially the first time you try it. So if you've any left, a gentler dose might be worth a try.

Though I am male, I think the principles are pretty much the same. When I was having orgasm problems with Paxil (similar to celexa in this respect), I found that the viagra would allow me to reach orgasm eventually, but it could take a very long time. I also had to reduce the Paxil dose to less than half the recommended, or stop it for a couple of days, or I could still not reach orgasm even with the viagra.

I tried loads of other things too (wellbutrin, gingko, remeron) but they had no effect for me in this problem. Never tried buspar though.

I know they say that the side effects of SSRIs should wear off after a few weeks, I found that this one never did unfortunately. I don't use SSRis at the moment, but one day I may well use them to control the opposite problem, premature ejaculation...

Leonardo.
