zyprexa

Posted by ashley on February 20, 2001, at 9:43:14

Hi
I have been using Celexa and Zyprexa for the last 7 months.
I had a major depression and was hospitalized. In the hospital they started
giving Zyprexa and after that my dr continued to give me as follow up. I am taking
10mg Zyp and 20 mg Celexa also. I gained 30 pounds. The problem is I want to get pregnant
and stop using these drugs. I feel much better, perfectly normal !!
My doctor is strongly against my stopping the medicine.
But I made up my mind, I'll have a baby.
Can I just stop taking these medicine? Is there a side effect if I stop taking them suddenly?
I intend to go back on the med if I feel depressed.
I am looking forward to a reply.
Thanks

You can call the University of California, San Diego Teratogen Hotline if you are in doubt about what drug can affect the development of your future baby. Its on this page:

Hi Ashley,
This is a really difficult personal choice for you. I believe most SSRI's are considered safe in pregnancy; when I was pregnant on risperdal (also an atypical AP), my pdoc told me it was a classified as a C, which basically means if the positives outweigh the negatives... If you become psychotic while pregnant, that is a lot worse for the baby then taking the medication. Physically it feels a lot better to taper Zyprexa than suddenly stop. Most ob/gyn's don't want their patients on any meds in the first trimester, but most shrinks will help you make an informed decision. I wish you all the best- Judy

Hi Judy
Thanks for the answer? I don't mean to pry but, did your baby have problems due to medication? It scares me so much to give birth to an unhealthy baby

Ashley,
I have a perfectly normal son (and I was on mellaril- an older antipsychotic- for part of the first trimester). Since then I have had several miscarriages (on drugs and off), where the chromosomal analysis of the fetus was normal. I have an autoimmune disorder which is probably to blame. I don't know your age, but you can request amniocentesis if you are really fearful. The meds that have the highest incidence of teratogenic effects are the anti-convulsants, and even then it is in the 5% range. There is an overwhelming chance of delivering a normal child on your med regime, the only negative will be not being able to breastfeed. I wanted to add that pregnancy was a time when my mood was most normal, and postpartum was when I had the biggest difficulties. Let me know how you do- Judy
