It's similar to valium. It is good for panic attacks for many people. I only take it before bedtime. It helps me go to sleep. It works for people with panic attacks where other meds do not help. I am definitely not an expert, maybe someone else could explain it better.

Hi Nikki - Xanax is alprazolam. Just like valium is diazepam. Same chemical group - benzo's - just a newer drug. When I was first prescribed it almost twenty years ago, it was thought to be less addicting than other benzo's. This proved not to be the case for me. i now take clonazepam, or generic Klonopin.
It's early morning here in Canada and I'm half awake (half asleep). Hope this info is of use and that you have a great day!Greg A.

Hi Nikki - I have been taking Xanax off and on for some time now. Firstly, after I nearly died from pneumonia, it was given to calm me down as I was so terrified. Recently I have been given it for severe panic attacks - and it works really well. I am a great believer in Xanax!
