Fibromyalgia and depression

Posted by Cass on March 12, 2000, at 17:47:57

I have a serious case of fibromyalgia. Aside from the natural supplement, MSM, I have never found a drug to help. Is there anyone else on this board who has Fibro and depression? Have you found anything to help both? I tried Elavil once with few results.

Did you by chance hear about the new "cure" for fybromyalgia? 20/20 aired a piece last Friday on this.

It seems that many Fybromyalgia and Chronic fatigue patients had an abnormality at the base of their skull that was putting pressure on the nerves from the brain. It can be found by having an MRI.

The Neurosurgeon performed surgery to release the pressure and patients with fybromyalgia resulted in their pain and fatigue going away.

People were thankful when the Neurosurgeon found the abnormality because their doctors, bosses, friends and family members all thought it was all in their head which resulted in depression for the aflicted person.

If you know the web address for 20/20's web site they said they would have the info there, sorry I don't know the web address, but maybe you can watch the next 20/20 and get it.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for that info, Sef and Craig. I'm looking into it. It would be miraculous if surgery could heal fibromyalgia!

I had hideous fibromyalgia for years- long before I even had a name to put to it.
I was eventually diagnosed with a bipolar II disorder, and some of the medications prescribed for that have put my fibromyalgia into almost total remission. The ones that seem to have helped most are ones that have also improved the quality of my sleep. Trazodone helped for about a year, but its effect wore off. Nortriptyline (at bedtime) has helped for several years. Also, I believe that Depakote (low dose) and Neurontin (moderate dose) have helped. Other meds that I take which may be contributing are (a VERY low dose of) clonazepam, and a low dose of xanax.
I find fibromyalgia symptoms to be distinct from sx of depression- they can occur together or separately. But having fibromyalgia is in itself depressing in its pain, disability, and amorphous nature which can be so hard to communicate. From the research I have done combined with my experience and intuition, I believe that fibromyalgia is in some way related to sleep disorder.
I hope that this is helpful.
I want to investigate the 20/20 show mentioned. Despite the remission of most of my fib. sx, I continue to have chronic pain and tension at the top of my neck/base of my skull.

Cass- did you look into the surgery tx for fibromyalgia? If so, I'm really curious what you found out. It seems like the sort of thing that it would be really hard to get an HMO to fund- at least mine (Kaiser), as they are not open to experimental treatments.

HI THIS IS A FIRST TIME FOR ME ON ONE OF THESE BOARD SO I APOLLOGIZE NOW IF I'M NOT DOING IT RIGHT.
MY NAME IS BARBIE AND I AM 24YRS OLD I HAVE A BEAUTIFUL 2 YEAR OLD SON AND I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE TALKNG ABOUT.AFTER MY SON WAS BORN I STARTED HAVING EXTREAMLY BAD PAIN IN MY ARMS AND WRIST.THEY SAID IT WAS CARPRELTUNNEL THEY TREATED ME AND IT WENT AWAY. WELL A YEAR AGO MY HUBSBAND WHO IS IN THE ARMY LEFT FOR SCHOOL . I WAS LEFT ALONE TO TAKE CARE OF MY LITTLE BOY . EVERYTHINKG WAS FINE UNTIL I STARTED HAVING PAIN IN MY ARMS AGIN. I THOUGHT IT WAS FROM CARRING HIM ALL THE TIME.SO THE STARTED THE CORTOZONE TRETMENTS AGIN BUT THIS TIME IT DIDN'T WORK IT JUST GOT WORSE AND WORSE. THEN I COULDN'T GET TO SLEEP AND WHEN I FINALLY DID I COULD BARLEY MOVE THE NEXT MORNING
I JUST GOT WORSE AND WORSE UNTIL I FINALLY BECAME DEPRESSED I GUESS YOU COULD SAY FROM THE PAIN.
AND I WENT TO DR. TO DR. TRING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IN THE HELL WAS WRONG WITH ME.FINALLY AFTER MANY TEST MY RHUMATOLOGIST DID THE PRESSURE POINT TEST AND SAID OH I THINK YOU HAVE FIBROMYLAGIA.
FINALLY AT LEAST THEY NEW WHAT IT WAS
WELL ANY WAY THEY PUT ME ON CELEBREX,AND PAXIL WHICH NETHER ONE WORKED THEN I WENT TO A NEUROLOGIST HE SENT ME TO A PSYCATRIST WHO PUT ME ON ZOLOFT AND AMBIEN .
THE AMBIEN WORKED GREATFOR MY INSOMINIA BUT ICOULDN'T WAKE UP FOR ANYTHIING THE NEXT MORNING.
SO HE SWITCHD ME TO SONATA WHICH IS WHAT I'M ON NOW. IT IS WONDERFUL AND THE ZOLOFT HELPS SOME
I TAKE BSPAR FOR MY TMJ WHICHED WAS CAUESED BY THE FM. RECENTLY I HAD TO UPDATE MY RECORDS SO I WENT TO MY NUROLOGIST WHO HAD BEEN UNDECIDED ON WETHER I HAD FM FOR SEVERAL MONTHES SO AFTER MORE TEST HE TOLD ME YES YOU DO HAVE IT. NO KIDDING I SAID!!!
ANYWAY SO I GO TO MY PSYCHATRIST WHO TELLS ME NO I THINK YOU HAVE MAJOR DEPPRESSION .
OK WHY I SAID HE SAID WELL YOU HAVE ALL THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
LIKE WHAT I SAID
WELL YOU CAN'T SLEEP YOU CAN'T REMEMBER THINGS YOU
HURT AND ACHE ALL THE TIME YOUR ALWAYS TIRED AND SORE

FM IS NOT IN YOUR HEAD NO MATTER WHAT SOME DR. ORSHINKS MAY SAY AND I'M SORRY BUT ALL THE ANTIDEPRESENTS IN THE WORLD WON'T MAKE THE PAIN GO AWAY. I DIFFENTLY THINK WITH FM YOU HAVE SOME DEPPRESSION BUT WHO WOULDN'T HURTING DAY IN AND DAY OUT. MY WORST DAYS ARE WHEN TE WEATHER CHANGES AND WHEN IT'S REALLY COLD OUT. I CAN ALWAYS TELL WHEN A STORM IS COMING .AND YEAH STRESS MAKES FM ALOT WORSE. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT IF YOU EVER DOUBT WHAT A DR SAYS AND YOU KNOW YOUR HAPPY IN YOUR HEAD AND YOUR HEART AND YOUR LIFE THEN GET A SECOND APPINION AND DO ALL THE REASEARCH YOU CAN ABOUT FM AND YOU'LL FIND THAT YOUR NOT ALONE .
AND REMEMBER THAT FM IS STILL NEW TO SOME DR. SO DON'T EVER LET SOMEONE TELL YOU YOUR PAIN ISN'T REAL GET A 2ND APPINION.
GOODLUCK
BARBIE

Barbie,

I have read that one of the problems sometimes associated with hypothyroid is carpel tunnel syndrome. About 5-10% of women who give birth develop postpartum thyroiditis. Maybe you should get this checked out, too.
