What is Mirapex taken for specifically? Is it a stimulant?

It's a dopamine agonists, approved here in the USA for the treatment of Parkinsons. I'm on my second trial with it for my depression. The first time I was limited in my dose due to nausea. This time I don't seem to have that problem.
I keep trying meds but have'nt found one that will give me long term recovery. I have known for many years that the cause of my depression is an endocrine disorder. Unfortunatly we know alot more about Mars than we do about the endocrine system. Eventually research will uncover the underlying cause of many forms of depression and it will have nothing to do with neurotransmitters.

As Bradley said Mirapex is a Dopamine agonist. Scientists have figured out how it works on the dopamine receptors but not really why it works. I had a good reaction to Zyprexa which also effects dopamine so I wanted to give Mirapex a try to see if it would help with a different set of receptors in the dopamine system. So far it has been very good for me. I can only hope that it keeps up.

Greg - We don't have Mirapex here (I don't think), but if it is a dopamine agonist (or even increases dopamine) it may interact with your Zyprexa causing it to work less effectively. This is only an educated guess, though.

Still trying to pick up your mood? If so, Provogil (modafinil) may be good for you. It is a stimulant, but is supposed to be less habit forming than Ritalin or the amphetamines. I think that it works via the GABA and glutamate system, more so than the dopamine system. I don't know it's drug interactions, though. I'll do some more checking. Again, this isn't a drug used in Canada, so I have no clinical experience with it. I have seen posts on this site about it. You may want to search them.

They are using it in kids with ADHD with few side effects. You, being the kid that you are, it may be an appropriate drug for you. Ask your doc and others on this site.

Sorry that I am not much help on this one, but hey, ya git what ya pays for (actually, the lasagne was so good, I do believe I owe you).

Hang in there dude and give the family a big hug from us - Cam

Cam,

My pdoc and I had a conversation about Mirapex and how it may not work with Zyprexa. I wanted to try Mirapex so he gave me script with orders that if it caused any problems I would stop the Mirapex.

To make it short - Mirapex has worked great, even in combination with Zyprexa. I can't explain why but then again neither can most doctors. All I know is that these two meds have done more for me than any thing else I have tried over the years. I can feel emotions again and that was one of my biggest problems with just an AD.

Right now I'm taking 3 mg/day of Mirapex and 7.5 mg of Zyprexa. I can only tell you how I feel but the combo for me has been nothing but good.

Chris

Chris,

How would you describe your depression. When I took zyprexa I had a good response for a day or so. Something that it was doing was targeting an area of my brain that needs help. But it lasted for only a day.

I am curious about Miraprex.

Jason,

My depression was pretty severe. About 3 years ago I had 3 psych hospitalizations and ended up in the ICU twice from suicide attempts. I met my current pdoc during one hospital stay and we have worked very hard to get where I am today.

I reacted to Zyprexa very well and quickly. It cleared my thinking and got me off of the obsession with death and suicide. It was the first thing that ever did that. I still take Nortriptyline as my main AD but augment with Zyprexa and now Mirapex. The latter two target different Dopamine receptors and so far don't appear to conflict with one another. John L or Scott could tell you better how they work but right now I'm just glad that they are working for me.

I stumbled across Mirapex while we were trying to get rid of my anhedonia problems. I wasn't as depressed in the past but there really was no joy in things I once enjoyed. I tried a bunch of the so-called stimulating meds - Wellbutrin, Adderall, Ritalin and Provigil (similar to the popular Anafrinil). I think it was here at PB that I was reading about Selegiline and mentioned it to my doctor. We delayed it a month and I did as much research as I could and found good information on Mirapex.

It's been two months now and I feel like I have many of my emotions back. I don;t feel like I'm just going through the montions anymore. Evidently my depression has more to do with dopamine than seratonin.

For some more info on Mirapex try these:

I printed them and brought them in to my doctor and he agreed to try it.

Good Luck,
Chris
