re: herbs

Hi,

I'm am epileptic and is currently taking 200mg x 2 lamictal, both in the
morning and night (ie 800mg a day). I'm also taking 500mg x 2 vigabatrin
(Sabril) in the morning and night (ie 2000mg a day). I am also taking herbs
(only recently) such as scullcap, valerian, hops, passion flower, vitamin B
complex, and minerals for the control of my nerves and stress. I wanted to
know if there are any interactions between these herbs and the
prescripted medications? Also, is it save to take these herbs at the same
time as the medications? I hope you can assist me in this matter.

Kai Chow - I have recently found a few articles in journals that can be accessed through Medscape (you have to signup to Medscape, but it's free). These articles are very interesting with regard to herbal medications.

The best of these is by Varro Tyler ( author of "The Honest Herbal"). It can be viewed at:

http://www.medscape.com/prometheus/SRAM/2000/v04.n02/sram0402.01.tyle/sram0402.01.tyle.html

Also, a couple by Susan Murch are good:

and

http://www.medscape.com/prometheus/SRAM/2000/v04.n02/sram0402.03.murc/sram0402.03.murc-01.html

A couple more to read, if you get bored with these are at:

http://www.medscape.com/PP/Pharmacotherapy/2000/v20.n11/pharm2011.02.harr/pharm2011.02.harr-01.html

and

http://www.medscape.com/PP/Pharmacotherapy/2000/v20.n11/pharm2011.01.cauf/pharm2011.01.cauf-01.html

and

http://www.medscape.com/PP/Pharmacotherapy/2000/v20.n07/pharm2007.22.rive/pharm2007.22.rive-01.html

Now, if this hasn't kept you busy enough, I found a white paper on herbal products. Check out Appendix 2: Sources of Information on Herbal Medicines and Alternative Therapies contain both english and non-english peer-reviewed (and not peer-reviewed) journals; databases; and websites at:

http://www.medscape.com/PP/Pharmacotherapy/2000/v20.n07/pharm2007.23.accp/pharm2007.23.accp-01.html

I'm sure the answers to your questions will be contained within one of these publications. Good luck and happy reading - Cam

Hi Kai Chow. I noticed your post, and you're the first epileptic I've seen here. May I ask you a question regarding your epilepsy? I recently started having grand mal seizures, and had various tests done, but they could not find any reason for me to be having these fits. Can you tell me, do you believe that a fit could be caused purely by getting extremely stressed out about something? Because certainly before the last one, I was very, very upset because of something that had just happened. I find the whole thing extremely scarey, and I'm getting fed up of finding myself covered in bruises with a very sore tongue where I've bitten myself quite badly! So it would be useful to know that if I try to keep calm, it might help!

Any information would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks.

Lisa
