Dr.Bob all:Has anyone else been harassed lately?

Posted by caroline h. on November 16, 2000, at 11:12:57

In the last week, I'm been IM'ed by 3 people (i think only two - one may have been a repeat) who have attempted to start sexually suggestive conversations with me? it is good that i can be extremely abrupt when comments are unwelcome, and i have reported these interchanges to AOL, but it is curious that i have received these in the last few days. this is the only board i have been active on for months (or even participated in) and i don't think the change comes from my name change since these people ask me my sex. it's only an annoyance so far since i don't let the conversations go far and put the people on the spot, but i was wondering if anyone else had been experiencing same. unless i'm paranoid, i think these messages are coming from someone (male) who is voyeuring this board, or heaven help us, one of our own. or perhaps an exiled one. all i know is that as soon as i see this person doesn;t know me and wants to engage in what i think may be sexually explicit dialogue, i hit that "contact AOL" button fast.
since i'm a techno goofus, any techno gurus here have any idea how this could be happening? and is it happening to anyone else?
thanks.

If Instant Messanger (?) is very similar to ICQ (and I believe it is) there are folks who hang out on-line just to see who they can harass, just as happens in some chat rooms, etc. With ICQ you ca block specific people from posting to you and you can also be invisible to others while on-line by making some adjustments on one of the menus. Perhaps you can do the same with IM. I imagine that what you have experienced is just a random occurrence. Others who use IM may have more insight into this but that's my guess...

Nope. I don't use IM or ICQ, though my email address is here. I've gotten nothing harassing at all, just general hotmail spam that could have come from anywhere.

Also if AOLīs IM is like ICQ there can be a webpage with your data. You have to choose not to display personal information or get listed for contacts.

More, if AOL IM is like ICQ consider setting it for not to show your IP addess to prevent exploits of your computer.

Why do you think the messages come from this forum visitorīs?. Because you post your AOL email?. You do not have to post your email with your message. If you want to post an email it could be better to get an alternate email (using a nickname) at yahoo.com or similar and read it as POP or forward mail to your original address (if you do not want to read from web).
