GABAPENTIN whats the ups and downs ???

Posted by Scerena on October 21, 2000, at 12:18:30

My doctor has diagnosted me for 'Tramatic Stress Syndrome" so he decided to put me on Gabapentin. I've never been on something like this( before it was the usual paxil,prozac,cyrpexia etc you all know the drill). Does this stuff help with the rage, missing time", and mood? Does anyone gain major weight on this stuff? If anyone can tell me how it affected them will you please respond. Thanks you very much...I'm totally nervous about using anything thats supposed to be used for seizures.

>Scerena, while you are waiting for specific posts in answer to your question, you might do a search on gabapentin on psychobabble--there's a lot of previous posts out there that may help you.

I second that, but I'd also do a search for Neurontin as not all of the posts use its other name.

I just started taking it Thursday for depression. It's too early to say what will happen. However, my psychiatrist tells me it has changed the lives of people with PTSD, and does not cause weight gain, at least, not in any of the patients he's had.

Good luck to you.

I would just like to add that gabapentin (Neurontin) is one of the least toxic drugs you can use. It is impossible to overdose on it, and does not require the liver to work to break it down. It may not do the job you are looking for, but it definitely won't hurt.

Good luck.

Scott, no liver?

I thought Neurontin was assimilated or broken down through the liver, at least that's what my pdoc said Thursday...unless he said something else and I misunderstood (he says a lot and sometimes my head is spinning over something earlier and I don't hear everything he's said afterward).

I was thinking earlier today that it was too bad that my mother never was given Neurontin, since it seems to be helpful to addicts. But my mom's liver was so damaged from drinking that I wondered whether they wrote it off because it is the liver that takes care of it.

Thanks.

NO LIVER !

:-)

renal = kidney
metabolized = liver
hepatic = liver

"Elimination: Gabapentin is eliminated from the systemic circulation by renal excretion as unchanged drug. Gabapentin is not appreciably metabolized in humans."

http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/gabapent_cp.htm

"Gabapentin is not appreciably metabolized in humans, is eliminated solely by renal excretion, and can be removed from plasma by hemodialysis.

Gabapentin does not induce or inhibit hepatic mixed function oxidase enzymes responsible for drug metabolism, does not interfere with the metabolism of commonly coadministered antiepileptic drugs, and is minimally bound to plasma proteins."

I never liked liver anyway. I knew what hepatic and renal mean, but metabolized was new. Thanks. I think my doctor misspoke.

BTW, I got a short email today from Dr. Feighner (boy was I surprised). Here's what he said:

1. It is very important to work with a current psychiatrist.

2. Best to try MAOI alone first to assess response and tolerability.

3. If necessary, combined MAOI and Wellbutrin can be utilized but requires careful monitoring.

Thanks again.
