another remeron question: JaneST, anyone?

Posted by cole on October 16, 2000, at 20:05:47

well i saw my pdoc on friday. she wants me to stick with the remeron at least until fall quarter is over so i can ace my classes instead of avoiding them. . . i would be fine with the remeron, even the sleepiness and possible weight gain, but there are other effects that are worriesome. this is my third time on remeron, the first lasted 3 months, and the second 2 days. both this time and last i found that my throat got sore and my lymph glands in my neck got swollen after 2 days on the med. my joints are all achey and yesterday i suddenly produced a cold sore on my lip-- this is probably the second time in my life i've had a cold sore.
i know the remeron is causing this stuff, since my immune system has been amazing since i quit smoking and started exercising over a year ago. all of this seems like an autoimmune reaction to the med. when i went off it the 1st time (after 3 mo) i had a completely random severe allergic reaction, and had to take prednisone. my pdoc said it was a rebound reaction to going without the histamine mechanism of remeron.
i'm getting a sneaking suspicion this stuff really messes with the immune system. is there anything i can do to counteract this response? does it get better? i was pretty achey this summer, but it seems worse now. thanks.

Cole:

Go figure, but I'm one of those people who ALWAYS has to read the package insert whenever I start to take a new med...and, of course, I had to read Remeron's. (This is usually to my detriment since my high anxiety level usually kicks in....)

BUT, I do remember reading that Remeron can affect the immune system, specifically your white blood cells, and it is recommended this be monitored closely...sounds like you need to inform your pdoc...and if the end of Fall Qtr is too far away...well, in my humble opinion...I would get another pdoc...or go to an internist or something...because everything you've listed is in the package insert.

Sorry, don't know of any alternatives for you, but definitely talk to your pdoc again...even if you have to take a copy of the insert, complete with the glaring yellow highlights!

Wishing you well...and let me know how it goes.

Jane

Jane,
thanks for responding. my doc was concerned about my response to the stuff, but i think she just figures we are about as good as we can get at this point. remeron is the only med that has ever worked, so she doesn't know what else to offer. i just get scared when the immune system gets involved-- one of my sister's friends developed lupus from her acne meds. i am seeing a naturopathic doc, and we are working on detoxing my system. he said we won't even talk about changing the psych meds until the rest of my body is well again. i'm going to keep praying, and see what changes i can try when the quarter ends. thanks for validating my concerns--i may get a little somatic at times, but i know when something is really wrong.
