anyone familiar with Doxepin?

Posted by CarolAnn on September 21, 2000, at 7:51:46

Hey ya'll,
I've been prescribed 50mgs. Doxepin for chronic pain. There's not much in Dr. Bob's tips, anyone have any experience or information? I know it's a tricyclic and I know it causes 'sweets' cravings(already gaining weight at an alarming rate!), but none of the 'Med' sites has very much info.
Thanx! CarolAnn

CarolAnn..Good old PubMed. I took Doxepin for a year or two in the late 80's and don't remember having many problems with it. I know stjames took it at higher doses and for a longer period of time than I did.
If I'm not mistaken, Amitriptyline, which I took for years in the 80's is used for pain mgmt also.
I was taking almost the max dose of Amitrip for years. Had, and acted on, big old cravings for chocolate!! Amitrip worked well for me and really gave me enthusiasm for exercise so I didn't just keep gaining and gaining.
James will have more info as far as Doxepin acting on H1 receptors, etc.
Hope this helps some,
Phil

Thanx Phil, I also took amitriptyline for several months, unfortunately I had to quit, 'cause I had the cravings, but also excess fatigue, so I gained weight big-time, which is also happening now with the doxepin.

stjames, any info to add regarding your experience with doxepin?
Thank you! CarolAnn

I also was on elavil and wanted to get off due to weight gain. I am on elavil and doxepin hoping to reduce the cravings and weight gain but am finding the doxepin even worse for cravings than elavil! I might try trimipramine and see if that does away with the cravings.

Hey Bee...

I'd be interested to know how you do with trimipramine. Why did you choose this drug? I have become interested in it, if for no other reason than it is weird for a tricyclic. It doesn't seem to do the things that have classically been thought of as necessary for a tricyclic to act as an antidepressant. It doesn't inhibit the reuptake of either norepinephrine or serotonin.

Good luck. Please post your experiences.

Thanks.
