I have been taking 25 mg. of doxepin and have decreased my elavil to 60 mg (was 80 mg) at night. I have been on this combo for 5 days. I am finding it harder to fall asleep at night (anywhere from 1 to 3 hours) and am waking up at 7 a.m. I am still feeling tired but not getting a restful sleep.
I had a bad day yesterday what with crying and feeling very down. The same sort of feeling I would get when I have decreased meds. before so obviously, I still need to be on meds.
How long before everything kicks back in? I am guessing that decreasing the elavil has brought the first signs of depression back. Will it take a while longer for the doxepin to kick in? How long should I give this combo a chance? I have a prescription for trimipramine also if this doesn't work.
I am trying this combo hoping that a lower dose of elavil will stop the carbohydrate cravings. I'm tired of the weight! Have also tried the SSRIs but not compatible.
Any ideas/thoughts?

Remember the lower limit of TCA's to effect depression is generally
75 mgs. Sleep is always a good guide as to dose, too. Even on a low dose
of doxipin, ~25-50 mgs, I could not avoid cravings. You might want to explore
some of the ideas we mentioned to you as it seems you, like I,
are/were stuck between the min dose to be effective for depression, sleep and cravings.
Sorry ! I can tell you that going between TCA and TCA, it is funny for 3-5
days, at least in my experience. I always took a little Atavin for these days. TCA's are very long acting, so it takes time
for the levels to stabilize. I would say give it a little while longer.james
