Hi Folks,
I have been taking Nardil, which was making me totally miserable. I tried all sorts of laxatives, fiber, prune juice, bran, metamucil etc. I was ready to quit when someone I know came back from England and heard about flax seeds. I have been taking them once a day; about 3 teaspoons in my cereal and they really work! They actually taste good. From my experience they should be soaked in the milk and then chewed thoroughly. I don't understand why most doctors in the US have never heard of this. Flax has been used for this purpose for thousands of years.
Anyway I'll get off my podium- it just seems that constipation is one common side effect of many psychiatric meds. I'd be interested in other's experiences.
Thanks
Peter

Peter - this has been such a huge problem for me with medications! I have been searching without success for a medication for over two years. I am going to try flax seeds TODAY, but I wondered if you are still out there watching the board, is it still working for you? Same amount, etc? My doctor is totally at his wit's end with me because I keep turning down medications for this reason, but I just can't tolerate either constipation (I've already had one surgery related to that and been told I need another) or weight gain. Thanks for any feedback anyone can give on this.

I have another tip that might help. At one time I was on "Pamelar" the constipation was horrible. My Doctor told me about taking Milk of Magnesia and a Herb called "Cascara Root", in the Hospital it is known as "Black and White" (the Milk of Magnesia is White and Cascara Black taken at the same time) and given to a lot of Geriatric patients. Follow the Adult dosing of each. It was the only thing that worked for me. Of course ask your doctor first. Good Luck. I know some of the best meds are the ones with the toughest side effects. Lexie

Yes, I'm still out here. I was using flax seeds because I was having a major problem with Nardil. I managed to get up to 60mg and the flax seeds were the only things that helped me stay at this level. However, it was clear that I needed to go to a higher dose and neither flax seeds, nor Milk of Magnesia, nor Metamucil, etc could make much of a dent. The result of all this is that I quit the Nardil about a week ago and will try desipramine. This being said, I really think that flax seeds worked better than anything else that I've tried. They taste decent in cereal- they should be soaked in the milk before you eat them. I used about 3 heaping teaspoons per day. I'm sure there are many other ways to add them to your diet. I also have heard that they have the highest percentage of Omega 3 fatty acids of any food.
Good Luck- I'd love to hear how it goes!
