Does Effexor xr really poop out?

Posted by CarolP on August 13, 2000, at 15:43:46

Does Effexor xr lose effectiveness? Any experience and/or literature on this? I have been on 225 mg. for about two years and in last few weeks have returned to classic depression symptoms: sleep, sleep, sleep, (makes for "great" weekends!), eat, eat, eat, not caring about/for self, do not clean place, etc.(not suicidal!). Am terrified of withdrawal symptoms, but will look into Prozac. Thanks!

James here....

I seems like poop out happenes to some people on
any AD. I feel it is not related to a specific AD
but the process all AD's use to acheive their effect.
If Effexor worked well for you you could try
increasing the dose and/or adding an augmenting agent.
I take 300 mgs Effexor XR and and Remeron 15 mgs
and this combo is very effective. Some doc's consider
it a big gun.

> StJames: Thank you for your suggestion. A funny thing about Remeron - took it 1x to help with sleep- WoW- had the tics and jerks all night! Vowed never again. Actually I think I am looking to come off Effexor - I am 59 and worried about the side effects to the eyes, weight, long and short term memory stuff, although when you are getting older memory stuff is up for grabs. Thanks again. CarolP

James here....

I can see why you would want to avoid it !
Have you been on any AD's that were even somewhat
effective ? It is hard to tell from Effexor/venlafaxine alone
which neurotransmitter an AD needs to effect, as Effexor
effects 2 that are assoc. with mood. Welbutrin/Buproprion
would be my other suggestion, it has action more like Effexor
and seems in some to be the least likely to cause
weight gain.It is a fact of life that all AD's effect weight in many people.
Do read up in the archives and on the Psycobable Tips:
http://www.egroups.com/links/psycho-babble-tips on how to come off
Effexor, it must be done properly to avoid signifacant w/d problems.

James
