Effexor XR and Headaches

Posted by Allison on July 8, 2000, at 12:15:07

Hi! I have been prescribed Effexor XR for my chronic headaches. I have been taking this for about 2 weeks and have only had a couple of headaches since, as opposed to having a headache EVERYDAY! So, it seems to be working.

I know people take this medication for different reasons, but I am interested in knowing about other's experiences in taking it for headaches, including migraines. I have taken Zomig and Maxalt in the past and had no relief for my headaches.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Allison:

One of the original reasons I started on Nardil was for migraine headaches. Helped tremendously! Ever since that pooped out I've tried a lot of things, including Effexor XR but I was not a lucky as you...it did nothing for my migraines and when taking it with Serzone, I was in a real foggy-zombie state...so it was dropped. Many years ago Tofranil also helped with my migraines.

Right now on Remeron and have only really had 4-5 migraines in almost 4 months...so I have to say that's pretty good for me. Hope the Effexor XR continues to do the trick for you.

Jane

Allison,

Have you tried Inderal, the beta blocker? I was taking 10mg, 3x a day for prevention of migraines and found that the headaches completely stopped. I now keep it on hand as needed. If I feel one coming on, I take the first dose immediately and continue at 3x a day until it is completely gone. I also take Ibuprofen along with it, as described below.

Also, I don't know your age but my friend, when in her late thirties, started Hormone Replacement Therapy (usually reserved for older women) and said she has not had a headache since and that was almost ten years ago. Imagine 10 years without a headache!:)- and she had them almost daily, when she started this therapy.

Migraines are also associated with an excess of prostaglandin hormone in the system. If you take 200mg of Ibuprofen, every four hours (you must be consistent), it will impair the production of Prostaglandin and aid in stopping the headache. You can't do anything about the excess hormone already present BUT you can shorten the duration this way.

Hope some of this is helpful to you.

Karen

Ditto with Tenormin, another Beta-blocker for me. I had chronic migraines (3 a week) for
many years, but when I began takin Tenormin and Prozac, they completely stopped.

Interesting. For me, Effexor had the capacity to give me *raging* headaches. Sometimes, I would stand up and stretch after sitting for a period, and my head would pound with each heartbeat like it was going to explode!
