My doc. prescribed me paxil and buspar for social anxiety and depression. Do these drugs complement each other? Do they work differently? Any tips would be appreciated. Billb.

Bill - Sorry, I forgot about your earlier question on this. I have been giving it some thought, though. I think that there would have to be some synergistic activity between these two compounds. While Paxil would increase serotonin transmission in a general way (ie throughout the brain), BuSpar regulates serotonergic transmission through a specific serotonin receptor (5HT-1A receptor, where it acts to both block and stimulate the receptor - ie acts as a mixed antagonist/agonist). I believe it is this action which is thought to more directly decreases anxiety (not positive - BuSpar's mechanism of action in anxiety has not been determined, yet). Therefore, Paxil and BuSpar probably complement each other.Hope this helps - Cam
