Yesterday, while in the company's restroom I witnessed behavior of one our customers that I found to be really intense (for lack of a better word). He came in, pulled off a paper towel from the dispenser, went to the urnal and did his business. He covered his hand with the paper towel and flushed, and then threw the towel away. He grabbed another one to turn on the water. He doused in hands in soap and proceeded to scrub his hands as though he was trying to scratch the skin off. Got more towels to dry his hands, threw them away, and grabbed another to turn off the water. Then he grabbed another to open the door to leave. Our restrooms here are immaculate. They are cleaned 2-3 times a day, and there is certainly very little chance of contracting any type of disease there.
I'm wondering if this might be a type of OCD behavior? I'm not critizing the man for what he did, I'm sure he had his reasons. But I have friends who have OCD, and I'm trying to learn more about it. I hope this will help me to communicate with them about OCD more intelligently. If anyone has experience that they could share with me, I'd appreciate it.
I hope I don't come off as being some kind of a "bonehead" here, I'm just trying to educate myself.

Greetz to Greg:
"I like to watch." (BEING THERE, Jerzy Kozinski)
There's only one way to find out: ask him.
"Excuse me, sir, but I couldn't help but notice that you have some very odd behavior
here, and this isn't the Will Rogers Memorial Park men's room ..."Keep smiling :-)

> kazooGreg, sounds like OCD handwashing to me. You might want to check out some OCD sites (e.g., www.ocfoundation.org) which describe OCD behavior. I have a friend who washes her hands constantly and worries about "germs." Unfortunately, I don't have that form (I'm the hoarder type...messy instead). OCD is more common than people think (2-15% of the population, according to current estimates I've been reading).

Sounds like classic OCD behavior. He is a washer. There are checkers, clearners, germ people, counters, and many other "types" of OCD that tend to fix around a behavior.

I do all of those things in a public washroom.(except use the urinal) Whether they look clean or not, I'm still a germ freak.
